Originally hailing from Reno, Nevada, Dennis Byram has been in the gaming business for 26 years, having spent 20 years working in the compliance department of one of the major gaming manufacturers before joining GLI Europe in 2010.

Compliance: delivering the right answers in a timely fashion

“Clients don’t want to wait days or weeks for an answer. Most often we have the answer within minutes and if we don’t know, if we need clarification, it’s better to be be transparent and honest about it. I’ll say I don’t know, I’m not really sure, but I’ll find out. And then you give an estimated date when you’re going to find out, and you live by that.

When Dennis Byram took the opportunity to work at GLI Europe in 2010, he accepted the position of compliance manager, a role he admits has been an exciting ride ever since.

“I’ve seen a lot of changes in the last six years, especially with the expansion of Internet gaming into regulated markets, which alongside innovative land- based technologies, ensures there’s something new every day,” explains Dennis of his daily role. “Each client has a different design, a different theory, a different way to present their game to keep the floor active with new material. So it’s really an exciting time to be working for GLI and it’s challenging too, but the great thing is, there’s an amazing team here, and I think that the co-ordination between all the different departments, all working together in harmony, is what really makes us so successful.”

Troughout our interview with Dennis, he repeatedly refers to the core values of the company, a relatively new addition to GLI’s working practices, but a significant one for both the company and its staff. Te core values are an especially important part of the way GLI governs itself and provides guidance to each day’s activities. “Our core values are 100 per cent focused on the client and upon providing the best service that we possibly can,” underlines Dennis. “I think that company wide, it’s something that’s making a huge difference. Te compliance portion of the business has been harmonised worldwide. What we do, how we do it, the tools that we use and how we do our work - it’s all in synch. So no matter where you

During G3’s visit to GLI Europe’s Holland HQ, the team were in the final stages of its Romanian market project, which had only recently published its rules for remote gaming. Te compliance team were subsequently working with the regulator to ensure GLI’s clients had the correct understanding of what the requirements were and that GLI’s testing criteria matched those requirements. Te compliance team was also working through the licensing process in relation to product compliance, as you need to have a special license to be able to operate in Romania. Te result of GLI’s efforts paid off two weeks following our visit, when GLI Europe became the first international gaming laboratory to be award Class II gaming systems licenses in Romania, no small part due to the hard work and dedication of Dennis and his compliance team.

“My department currently takes care of all licensing processes in Europe,” explains Dennis. “From experience, we know that the more work and effort you put into the process upfront, the easier everything is in the long run. However, right now there’s lots of
