POOL & SPA INDUSTRY
A Constantly Evolving Industry
As the unsettled summer draws to a close, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights some of the recent work done by the relevant associations, potential changes ahead and opportunities that exist in the coming months
W
ith autumn now upon us, hopefully you are reflecting on a good summer business-wise, even if the weather has been
quite changeable!
The summer saw a large amount of work going on behind the scenes to ensure the industry voice was heard. Correspondence included a contribution to a Government consultation through BIS about the appointment of a ‘Late Payment Tsar’ or in plain English, somebody in Government to look after the interests of smaller businesses when faced with potential issues caused by larger businesses.
This summer has also been very busy for contributing to changes in a number of existing European standards and the development of new ones. In this issue of SPN, Ralph Riley (former Chief Executive of the ISRM) and the current Chairman of BSI’s sport playground and recreational equipment and Chair of the swimming pool and aquatic equipment committee (SW/136/8) gives an overview of European standards that specifically deal with swimming pools. The hard work also continues on the development of the European standard for Mini Pools (TC 402 WG3) which in now open for public comment (via the CEN Public Enquiry) and also for Domestic Spas and Hot Tubs (TC 402 WG4), which has convened a couple of online meetings via Webex and the next face to face meeting is in Italy this November. This time of year also sees the annual conferences for BISHTA and SPATA and this year they are being held separately to maximise the content for each of the trade associations for the benefit of its members. BISHTA’s conference is on Tuesday 29 September and SPATA’s is on Thursday 8 October. A number of topics will be covered at each conference to help members with SPATA offering updates on getting to grips with pension auto enrolment, news on Business Information Modelling (BIM), European standards and the industry approach to safety devices. For BISHTA, in addition to a topic on pension auto enrolment, there will be news from some

Public Health England research into hot tubs and the affects of aerosolisation, updates on workforce qualifications and an update on hot tubs in holiday lodges, including any news of the revision of the Management of Spa Pools publication. Some of these hot tub topics are included on the next page of this issue of SPN. The BSPF AGM is being jointly held at both the BISHTA and SPATA annual conferences and feedback will be sought from the members of both trade associations about a proposal not to appoint a BSPF President at SPATEX 2018. The appointments of Alex Kemsley (in 2016) and Will Dando (in 2017) will go ahead as planned. The proposal to be discussed is whether to dispense with a BSPF President in favour of raising the profile of the respective SPATA and BISHTA Chairmen. If the members are in favour of such a proposal, then there would be no appointment of a Junior Vice President this year and this would give an additional nine months for the BSPF Board to develop a comprehensive strategy for taking this suggestion forward, without adversely affecting the collective industry voice required. The autumn brings with it the opportunity to visit a number of established shows at home and abroad, such as LIW, Aquanale, Piscina & Wellness and the Pool/Spa/Patio Expo in America. The excitement is rising as we wait to learn who will be the winners of the European Pool and Spa Awards for 2015. A number of UK companies are keeping their fingers crossed that they will be amongst the award recipients for this year. The December issue of SPN will have all of the news from this third annual event. In order to be nominated for these European awards, companies must first enter the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards (hosted by SPATA and BISHTA). This year, the deadline for entries is Friday 6 November and entries can be submitted online. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to provide your company with the chance to win an award and thereby you can help the industry promote itself to the commercial and domestic audience who will be our next customers. Tickets for the industry gala dinner featuring
the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards and the re-presentation of the ISPE awards are available from the BSPF office, priced at just £69.95 + VAT per person.
Finally this autumn, SPATA Regional meetings will be held at various locations in October and November. Please contact the office if you need more information, but the plan is to hold events in Berkshire, Derbyshire, Devon, Essex, Surrey and Yorkshire, so hopefully there will be one reasonably near you. A variety of topics are planned for these meetings, including updates on SPATA Standards, topics that you wish to raise and it is hoped to increase the social element of the meetings.
