“MY SCHOOL IS NO ISLAND” PRIZE WINNERS’ TRIP TO LONDON

From the 30th April – 4th May the winners of the contest “My School is no Island” from Domingos Capela visited London. The students were escorted by three teachers. Before arriving in London the English teacher had pre- pared for their visit by researching all the key sites and had produced a guide to the city and a trip booklet with a London tour quiz and some scrapbook pages. The students and their teachers enjoyed a very full 4 day programme which included most of the major sites in London. THE FIRST DAY was full of new experiences: from the check-in procedures in Porto to the transfer in Gatwick airport and then the Hostel – The YHA near King’s Cross and St Pancras Stations opposite the Brit- ish Library. After dropping our bags and grabbing a bite to eat, the group headed to Camden Market to soak up the atmosphere and spend the rest of the day browsing around the crazy shops and stalls. ON THE SECOND DAY the group took a long walk along Oxford Street towards Marble Arch, through Hyde Park to Kensington. We were able to visit the Natural History Museum (anthropology, geology and the history

of earth and the human species), the Science Museum (scientific and technologic achievement through the cen- turies) and the Victoria and Albert Museum (decorative arts, artefacts of daily life). Then we walked across Hyde Park and a group of students visited Madam Tussaud’s to have their pictures taken with some famous wax mod- els from politics, music and film including Justin Bieber, One Direction, President Obama and Princess Diana while others spent their time doing some more window- shopping. ON THE THIRD DAY the group hopped on a double- decker bus to Buckingham Palace. We were escorted by a lovely guide who taught us a few historic facts and cu- rios. We saw the Change of the Guard and learnt that the princess had just been born. We then went to Trafal- gar Square and saw several performances by groups of Morris dancers. After lunch we got on the tube to Big Ben and Westminster Abbey, some of the most recog- nised sites in London. We were able to see the London Eye before we crossed Westminster Bridge to the south bank and walked back east towards Tower bridge past
