Greater Wilmington CVB

February 24-26, 2012 Wilmington, DE - Twenty Meeting Planners from the area between New York City and Washington, DC attended the 5th Annual FAM/DineAround hosted by the Greater Wilmington Convention & Visitors Bureau and Mid-Atlantic Events Magazine.

According to Sara Garnett, Director of Sales at GWCVB and coordinator of the event, “…the goal of the FAM/Dine Around is to introduce Planners to our area in a very personalized fashion so that they can truly experi- ence its rich and unique diversity. It’s an ideal way to showcase our area and its assets. It also demonstrates the accessibility of our attractions, hotels, meeting spaces and restaurants.”

Par ticipants arrived at the host hotel, Hilton Wilmington/Christiana in Newark on Friday. The evening began with a Welcome Reception followed by trans- portation via Delaware Express to Historic Odessa, where attendees got a look at 18th- and 19th-century lifestyles.

After a hearth cooking demonstration in the

Collins-Sharp House, the group toured the Corbit-Sharp House, which is regarded as one of the finest Georgian homes on the eastern seaboard. Then they dined in the town’s newly opened Cantwell Tavern & Restaurant, located in what was originally the Brick Hotel.

Saturday began with a Networking Breakfast at the hotel giving the planners the opportunity to interface with many GWCVB members. Since this year’s FAM was theater-focused, the first stop on the schedule was Theatre N, which showcases independent and foreign films and also doubles as a unique venue for special events.

A quick drive-thru tour of Wilmington’s revital-

ized Riverfront Area gave the Planners a chance to see the Chase Center on the Riverfront, the city’s largest meeting and event facility, and attractions like the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Delaware Children’s Museum, Frawley Stadium and the DuPont Environmental Education Center in the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge.

The Grand Opera House was next, showcasing its many beautiful event spaces and lobby areas available, as well as its magnificent theater. Lunch was served at Goodstay Mansion located on the University of Delaware’s Wilmington Campus, and was followed by a visit to Arsht Hall, also on the campus. Afterward, the Planners took a ride through Wilmington’s Chateau Country before heading to the DuPont Theatre for a behind-the-scenes tour of the historic property. The FAM was capped off, with dinner and a performance by Patrizio Buanne at World Cafe Live at the Queen in Downtown Wilmington.
