TECHNOLOGY / LIGHTING DETECTIVES, BANGKOK, THAILAND

The bad - poor maintenance and upkeep of street lighting in Bangkok is commmon; mixed lighting sources at Pak Khlong flower market

and fluorescent right next to each other. One group even found a rotting durian covering the the casing of an external public lighting fixture. As with many other countries, one of the biggest issues is maintenance. Even though a considerable investment is made on purchasing and installing lighting for Bangkok’s spectacular temples and monuments, upkeep and replacement of bulbs is often inadequate. Despite this, traditional design of Thailand’s temples is exemplary and contains its own signature innate lighting awareness with thousands of tiny mirrors embedded in spires that change continually through the day as the sun moves

WILL THEIR FINDINGS BE ACTED UPON? “Yes!” averred Dr Acharawan, “We will send our analyses to correspondent offices such as Bangkok Metropolitan Administrative (BMA), Tourism Authority of Thailand, Metropolitan Electric Authority and urban departments.” Of course without sponsorship the entire event would have been impossible. Nine sponsors made significant contributions to the activities: We-ef, ENDO, LAMP, Philips, L&E, Live Lighting, Magtronica and Global

They were so eager to talk with me and exchange ideas to improvement the Bangkok lighting environment. I loved their passion for lighting!”
