It’s actually quite poetic.” When the project was conceived over a year-and-a-half ago, OLED technology was surrounded by much uncertainty: how would panels be affected by constantly switching on and off? How long would they last? How stable would the colour rendering be? How stable would the colour temperature itself be - and would this deteriorate at the same rate in all the panels used? Kardorff turned to Philips Lumiblade for some answers and - due to the turnkey nature of the project - they responded by offering to act as con- tractor on the job, so ensuring the panels were correctly installed by a team with a thorough understanding of the technology. To guard against future breakages or fail- ures, a frame of OLEDs - sixteen in total - were installed in a side room that also houses the driver technology. These are run in tandem with the main chandelier, thus ensuring these spares have the same appearance of any panel they may be called upon to replace. To heighten the clean, high-quality fin- ish of the piece, all power for the OLED panels is supplied through the same slender pipes that hold the frames in place. Each frame requires twelve cables and these run either up to the ceiling or down to the floor (depending on whichever is nearest) before heading on to the driver room. The central column of dichroic glass is the second, crucial element in the design. The spiral nature of the staircase and the fact it wraps around the piece, means the viewpoint of anyone moving between floors is constantly shifting. The visual effect cre- ated by the glass changes depending on the angle of observation and so the piece ap- pears in constant flux. The viewer may see

Die Berliner Geschäftsräume der Deutschen Bank bieten unter anderem eine bedeutende Funktion als Location für Zusammenkünfte auf höchster Ebene mit Kunden, politischen Vertretern, Mediengruppen und Wirtschaft- sakteuren. Diese Zusammenkünfte finden in dem Besprechungszimmer in der fünften Etage statt, in die man von der darunter liegenden Etage über eine spi- ralförmige Treppe gelangt. Kardorff Ingenieure Lighting Design wurden mit der Gestaltung eines Beleuchtung- steils beauftragt, welches diese Treppe ergänzt und die doppelte Geschosshöhe dieses Bereichs unterstreicht, in welchem sie sich befindet. Ihre Lösung war ein Kronleuchter mit 24 quadratischen Rahmen aus hochglänzendem Aluminium mit einer zentralen Achse aus dichroitischem Glas. Jeder Rahmen hält 16 OLED Panels, die spiegelartig erscheinen, wenn sie ausgestellt sind. Das dichroitische Glas erscheint entweder blau oder gelb, abhängig davon, wie viel Licht ausgestrahlt wird und wie stark die Spiegelung ist. Wenn

As daylight fades and the OLEDs are turned on, an extra layer of light is added to the mix. The warm white glow of the OLED panels, as well as their reflection in the glass and chrome frames, are also spectrally altered by the glass. The finished piece seems effortlessly styl- ish, and belies the complexity of the sup- porting technology - including the spring- loaded, reinforced metal plates hidden in the floor and ceiling that hold everything in place - and the huge collaborative effort that went into bringing the project to frui- tion.

padario composto da 24 bracci quadrati di alluminio cromato lucido che fanno da contorno ad una colonna centrale in vetro dicroico. Ogni braccio sostiene 16 pan- nelli OLED che quando la luce è spenta sembrano degli specchi. Il vetro dicroico appare blu o giallo a seconda della quantità di luce che trasmette o riflette. Mentre i visitatori si muovono intorno al lampadario il vetro di- croico sembra cambiare colore. Dato che la tecnologia OLED è una novità, Philips Lu- miblade si è proposta come appaltatore del progetto, contribuendo alla produzione e all’installazione dei pezzi. Entre las principales funciones de las oficinas del Deutsche Bank en Berlín se encuentra una muy impor- tante: la de albergar las juntas de más alto nivel con clientes, representantes políticos, grupos de medios y líderes de negocios. Dichas juntas se llevan a cabo en la


sala del quinto piso a la cual se accede desde el cuarto piso mediante una escalera espiralada. Se le solicitó a Kardorff Ingenieure Lighting Design que crease una pieza de iluminación para complementar la escalera y enfatizar el techo de doble altura del espacio donde se encuentra emplazada la misma. La solución propuesta fue una araña compuesta por 24 marcos cuadrados de aluminio pulido cromado rodean- do una columna central de cristal dicroico. Cada marco sostiene 16 paneles OLED que aparecen como espejos cuando están apagados. El cristal dicroico aparece tanto azul como amarillo dependiendo de la cantidad de luz que está transmitiendo y de cuánto esté reflectando. A medida que los visitantes se trasladan alrededor de la araña, el cristal dicroico pareciera como si cambiara de color. Dado que la tecnología OLED aún es nueva, Philips Lu- miblade se ofreció para actuar como contratista para el trabajo, colaborando en la producción e instalación de la pieza. Toda la instalación eléctrica para los paneles de luces viajan a través de las delgadas tuberías de soporte con salida a una sala cercana.
