become accessible to more people, that difference between games for online and land based will start to decline.”

Jaydeep Chakravartty - Cozy Games: “We believe the games developed for land- based platforms initially followed similar pattern, based on the expectation of the real players sitting on them. This opposed the sanctuary of the house where a player can login to several websites online and choose the best games to play. Due to increased expectations, it is much harder to create a “real” atmosphere in the games simulating the symbols and sounds, and still providing a differentiating factor with games available from other provider.”

Peter Causley - Lightening Box: “Creating the actual games is easier for online as there aren’t the numerous geographical regulations from one geographic land based market to another. It is also harder to get into land based markets via the manufacturers due to their well- established in-house design studios.”

Scott Smith - Next Gen Gaming: “A slot machine is a controlled environment. All operational hardware and software is contained within. Game design and gameplay are only limited to the machine’s ability where online, there are uncontrollable variables affecting game design such as internet comms speed, comms dropouts, user CPU power… Game design for both environments is relatively simple once developers thoroughly understand the specifications and limitations of each application.”

What skills have enabled you to be successful as an independent developer?

Scott Smith - Next Gen Gaming: “A strong landbased heritage, core focus and a fabulous team of people that help create and maintain a healthy working environment.”

Justin Chamberlain - Betlow: “Persistence, creativity, networking, presentation and coding.”

team, blissful ignorance and thick skin!”

Ramiro Atucha - Leander Games: “Experience - even though we are quite new to the industry (2008), we were able to build the company around very experienced people that wanted to go for a chance and innovation. Being able to balance experienced resources with complete outsiders, and transform that in a team was probably our biggest asset. This sense of team and community spewed the passion and ownership that each member has for his everyday tasks.”

For the main theme of the game we

work with different external musicians that capture the essence of the game and help communicate the

different stages of the game to the player. A bad sound effect or

end users to understand the customer base and successfully put the customer at the heart of product development. We are only scratching the surface of segmentation and presenting the right gaming experience to the right customer groups. Oh and great content.”

Ramiro Atucha - Leander Games: “The media through which the games are distributed will continue to change. In only a few years we saw the appearance of iphones, androids and Ipads. This will continue to happen challenging our development teams. Our capacity to adapt to those new media while keeping present that they are just media, and that the key is to continue building great games is, in my opinion, what will shape the industry in the upcoming years.”

Jaydeep Chakravartty - Cozy Games: “Introduction of new communication devices through which players can connect to the games would be a primary driver for shaping the industry in coming
