JCM Global has re-entered the ticket printing sector having formed an alliance with Canada-based specialist, Nanoptics, introducing its printer technology to OEMs at a totally different level

JCM Global's recent announcement that the company is entering the printer sector is actually a return to previous form. Historically, JCM has a vibrant past in the printer business, with the TSB2 well remembered as a very successful basic black/white printer. It wasn't particularly advanced from a feature standpoint, but it was a rock steady product that dispensed with the bells and whistles.

After a brief alliance with TransAct, in which JCM invested time and energy into an existing sales relationship (which resulted in tremendous success with OEMs), TransAct chose to follow its own agenda. Since the ending of the relationship two years ago, JCM sought to appraise the wealth of IP in the printer market. It was at this point that the Canadian company, Nanoptics, piqued interest with its unique technology. “We

were really impressed with what Nanoptics had achieved,” described JCM's Tom Nieman. “The speed at which the ticket is produced (six tenths of a second) means that there's no need to burst the ticket. Speed is a much laboured issue, but in a through-put industry, it’s a major advantage to deliver at speed.”

Having liked what it saw, JCM approached OEMs to ask for their opinions about Nanoptics, where again the response was wholly positive as many were already in the process of certifying the device on their platforms. “We saw that Nanoptics had already gained credibility with OEMs in this market,” stated Mr. Nieman. “The company was already substantially into and down the platform route, more so than we had realised. The combination of this acceptance and highly developed

technology impressed us. The robust printer head, building upon the life expectancy of what's currently available, was even more remarkable as the product simply didn't have the visibility that it deserved. We believed that a merged relationship would lead to extremely interesting things.”

JCM’s goal was to combine its iVIZION currency validation technology with applications down the line that could be married with the capability of a robust, capable printer. Following positive preliminary discussions, JCM and Nanoptics announced the formation of a relationship that Mr. Nieman describes in terms of ‘one and one equalling three.’ “This is a synergistic relationship,” states Mr. Nieman. “We are not future- developing our own printer, but have instead taken Nanoptics under our wing, introducing its printer technology to the OEMs at a different level. The response to which, has been very, very strong.”

Nanoptics is to benefit from JCM's renowned R&D prowess, with a Japan- centric focus on manufacturing and design excellence that will bring further rewards to both parties in the relationship. The deal also comes during a period of spectacular sales growth for JCM, which has just agreed a 5,000 piece
