What are the major obstacles/challenges facing the gaming industry today, and how as a third-party developer are you best placed to tackle them?

Ramiro Atucha - Leander Games: “One of the main obstacles will always be innovation. So far I believe we've done very well. We are working on building a brainstorming team to collaborate with us in the generation of new concepts and ideas. The second challenge is deploying our games through the mobile networks. The devices have evolved and it is now feasible for the mobile users to experience decent quality slot games. However, there is such a diversified variety of devices that providing a mobile application that works well across all the platforms will certainly represent a challenge.”

Justin Chamberlain - Betlow: “Getting games to market faster than the typical 12 months it currently takes! As for being positioned to do so, well the only way
this is going to be achieved is if we make the required investment into our own GDM (game Developer Module) which we would then need to code into all of the major platform providers back ends. If we can achieve this then we would be able to design, develop and deliver games to operators on pretty much our own schedules as we would never need to rely on resource at the platform provider end for engine development etc! I am hoping to make this required investment over the coming 12 months.”
Jaydeep Chakravartty - Cozy Games: “We believe that the technology and player preferences are changing very rapidly. With the growth of smart phones and hand held devices, the access point of the games will change rapidly. Companies, who will embrace these changes, will become much stronger. Cozy Games is a company that invests heavily into innovation and new technology. We are small but very aggressive and agile, this is our key strength. We have developed a very comprehensive internship program, which helps us to attract best technical talent and retain them.”
Scott Smith - Next Gen Gaming: “There are a number of changes impacting the industry, including the migration to country by country regulation. We are well placed to meet these challenges given we do not shoulder the larger
technology effort of the platform suppliers.”
With casual games taking off on the App Store and companies such as Aristocrat and Amatic already converting their games to apps - do you see this as a viable platform for your games both now and in the future?
Justin Chamberlain - Betlow: “I do, but we need to find a way to compete with the likes of Aristocrat in terms of content of course.”
Steve Schrier - Ash Gaming: “So far we haven’t seen business cases to support the hype in terms of tangible revenue streams but the penetration of products such as the iPad are undoubtedly going to change the way that people consume media in the home and this cannot be ignored. There are a complex set of barriers to overcome and the answers haven’t been completely worked out yet but once they do this could be a viable channel for delivery.”
