BTEC Extended Certifi cate Health and Social Care is an ideal course if you are hoping to work with people, particularly if you are interested in a job such as nursing, childcare or care work. The course gives a clear idea of what is involved in health and care work, and helps students gain the skills and abilities needed to successfully move towards their chosen career, whether through further study or employment.
Each of the three units studied looks at a different topic. Unit 1 asks you to study various forms of communication that health care professionals use with their clients. Unit 2 looks at individual’s rights and needs and how people working in health and social care try to uphold these rights and address people’s needs. Unit 3 is based on one week of work experience you will undertake in a nursery or old people’s home.
The BTEC Diploma and Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care are suitable for you if you have a genuine interest in health, education or social care work or if you plan to study a related subject at university. You will study many different aspects of health and care, from communication skills to health & safety and equality laws, and from Biology to Psychology. Learning about the basics of care and the practical side of maintaining good relationships with others will provide you with useful experiences, transferable skills and abilities.
This 2-year course has no exams; you will be assessed entirely through essays, projects, presentations and research. This includes a work placement where you can use and develop the skills you have learned.
Because the BTEC is a vocational course, you must have a genuine interest in H&SC, and a positive attitude to new experiences! You should also be prepared to meet deadlines, accept guidance, and develop independent study skills.
The course is challenging, but very rewarding, and is excellent preparation for employment or university.
“
Health and Social Care is enjoyable because it helps you understand about different aspects of the community and you can apply the skills you learn to work experience.
