The study of English Literature at AS and A level is all about exploring different genres of writing, the ways of telling a story and possible interpretations and meanings of texts. English Literature is all about relationships, love, sex, jealousy, ambition, power, corruption, confl ict, violence, vice, horror and adventure. You will explore and analyse a range of novels, plays and poetry to discover what has interested writers in different centuries; how writers use form, structure and language to tell stories and shape meaning; and the signifi cance of their works, both when they were written and for later readers and audiences.

You do not need to have studied English Literature at GCSE, but because the course involves a good deal


of reading and writing, we expect you to have at least a grade C in English, a genuine desire to read and


explore challenging texts, and a willingness to share your opinions about them.


Students who study English Language or English Literature at A level go on to a variety of careers, including teaching, journalism, law, marketing, management and the media. Employers like the high level comprehension and presentation skills which the courses encourage.
