In Business Studies you will learn how businesses operate, how they grow, why some succeed and why others fail. You will examine the various functions including how businesses promote their products, raise and manage fi nance, and organise production and their personnel. You will learn why some people are better managers than others, and why some have the qualities needed to become multi-millionaire entrepreneurs. Theory is linked to the real world so that you can appreciate how business works in practice. You will also look at how external infl uences affect business, and how businesses react. For example, you fi nd out how businesses compete with rivals and what steps they might take in order to survive an economic recession. Business Studies can be combined with a wide range of subjects at degree level and provides a sound basis for many lucrative careers.
BTEC Business takes a practical look at the world of business; business concepts and theories are applied to real organisations. You will learn by completing projects and assignments; the courses are assessed entirely by coursework – no exams!!! The BTEC Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3 A levels while the BTEC Diploma is equivalent to 2 A levels. BTEC is a well established qualifi cation and is highly regarded by both universities, who increasingly assess through coursework, and employers. The courses examine all the key business areas including marketing, human resources, operations management, fi nance, enterprise and management. Assignments are then based on specifi c businesses, many of them local, to enable you to develop an understanding of how business theory works in practice. BTEC assignments will be undertaken both individually and in groups, and will attempt to give you the chance to develop team and communication skills. Assessment methods are varied and might involve you: making presentations, writing business reports, preparing wall displays, creating websites and fi lming documentaries.

BUSINESS studies“
The highlight of the Business Studies course for me was the Dragons’ Den competition. After a year of exploring how businesses function and become successful, we had to pitch original ideas to a group of top Scarborough business people. A really memorable experience; and the winners got to meet a real Dragon, Theo Paphitis!
