Level 1 Diploma Land Based Studies (Animal Care) Duration: 1 year (full time) Entry Requirements: No formal entry qualifi cations Course features: A starter course which includes basic skills needed for further learning or employment, and functional skills (English, ICT and Maths). Work is assessed continually throughout the course. What next? Further Study: Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care. Careers: Work in kennels, animal sanctuaries or pet shops.





Level 2 Animal Care Duration: 1 year (full time) Entry Requirements: 4 GCSE’s at grade E or above (normally to include Maths, English and Science) and a suitable reference. Course features: Students learn how to plan and monitor animal feeding and how to maintain health, welfare and accommodation. There are introductions to behaviour, handling, breeding and grooming and understanding the principles of animal biology. Level 2 involves lectures, guest speakers, visits, practical sessions and work placement. Work is assessed continually throughout the course. What next? Further study: Level 3 Diploma in Animal Management. Careers: Work with animal collections, welfare sanctuaries, boarding and breeding establishments, pet shops etc.


Very good basis for anyone wishing to move onto any job in the animal industry.

Level 3 Animal Management Duration: 2 years (full time) Entry Requirements: 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above (ideally including Maths, English and Science) or an equivalent Level 2 qualifi cation at a suitable grade. Course features: Students learn the skills needed to care for, handle and manage a variety of animals, how the animal body works, nutritional requirements, behaviour and communication, health and husbandry, breeding and genetics, exotics and business management. Students will undertake their own investigative project. Level 3 involves lectures, guest speakers, visits, practical sessions and work placement. Work is assessed continually throughout the course. What next? Further Study: Higher education qualifi cations such as Foundation Degrees or Honours Degrees in related subjects. Careers: Animal welfare offi cer, technician, zoo keeper, pet shops, running own business, kennel or cattery manager.
