The individual winner is Megan Hunter 1C who collected 112 wrappers – well done!
A day was chosen when pupils and staff were encouraged to wear Fairtrade tops to school to show their support for Fairtrade.
The local primary schools also got involved in Fairtrade Fortnight. Katie Bogan and Sophie Cairns (both S1) went down to fi nd out what was happening in the Primaries. At Houston Primary (which is already a Fairtrade School), the Enterprise team ran Fairtrade stalls selling Fairtrade pan pipes, colouring pencils, fl utes, boxes, bangles, Geobars, Chocolate Bars, Dubble Bars, Chocolate Buttons, Jelly Teddies, friendship bracelets and bird whistles. This stall was very popular and many of the pupils and staff purchased goods.
Bridge of Weir Primary took part in Fairtrade Fortnight too. They ran stalls, created posters and presented assemblies to show their support of Fairtrade. They also took part in the Fairtrade bunting competition. The school organised a Fairtrade Day, which was headed by the Primary 6s. During this day all the different classes learnt about Fairtrade, mainly about Fairtrade cotton. Two girls from Primary 6 attended the Bridge of Weir Fairtrade Coffee Morning, where they met Fairtrade olive growers from Palestine, who told them about her life as an olive grower.
Bridge of Weir Primary has now applied to become a Fairtrade school. They have sent out a survey to see if the parents would agree to change the uniform to one made of Fairtrade materials and received very positive results!
Fairtrade Fortnight is a fantastic opportunity to get the message of Fairtrade across. All the Gryffe pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed the Fortnight, and hopefully next year will be just as successful!
Well done to all those involved!
