Squash Finals Night
Some quality squash was on display on Friday 29th April with the Strathgryffe’s Tennis & Squash Club’s Squash Finals Night. Unfortunately the Junior final was unable to be played due to illness, however this will be rearranged for a later date.
First up was Andrew Stark v Struan Grant in the Junior
3/4 play-off. It’s becoming habit that these two play each other on Finals night with both having been involved in the Junior Final for the past two years. Struan (along with most of the Juniors at the club) showed just how much he’s improved this year by his determination, powers of retrieval and his shot making. Unfortunately for Struan, Andrew also continues to improve and the result was another close fought 3-0 victory for Andrew (15/9, 15/13, 15/10).
Next on was the Senior Plate final between Mike “Edge” Gallagher and Martin “Stig” Lawson. Mike won the Plate last year and was under pressure to retain his trophy. Martin came out all guns blazing and really looked in the mood. He took a substantial early lead in the first before Mike started to peg him back with some canny stuff, unfortunately it was just a little bit late and Martin went on to win the first 15-13. The next two games went pretty much the same way with Martin building early leads and Mike then pegging it back. Martin won 3-0 (15/13, 15/9, 15/12).
European Success for Cameron
Cameron Kerr, a member of Strathgryffe Tennis & Squash was selected as part of an elite Scottish contingent of players to compete at a top European tournament in Bressuire in France last month. This tournament attracts many of the top 11 & under tennis players in Europe and last year none of the players selected from Scotland managed to win a match

Kilmacolm Tennis Club
The Club
recently held its AGM when
Bob Mitchell retired as the Club President after 11 years in the role. Bob raised the applications to the LTA and for Lottery Funding and was meticulous in detail and with the help of a good Committee around him the club achieved the excellent infrastructure we see today. As a thank you for his work he was presented with a painting of the Clubhouse and Courts which was painted by local artist and tennis club member Gordon Adams.
Incoming President, Graham Robertson thanked Bob for his sterling work and went on to challenge all members of the club to welcome new members and to make Kilmacolm Tennis Club the place for local people young and old to want to play tennis.
Next up was the main event, the Senior Club Championship Final. Defending champion Chris Patrick v last years runner-up James Dare. Chris was going for his 4th Championship in a row and as usual in matches between these two, the standard was amazing. First game looked promising for James, he led 4-0 before Chris took a great run of 10 points, then James took the next 5, next points were pretty even with Chris eventually winning 15/13. The next two games were pretty even but in each of them Chris just had a few runs of points that just kept him ahead of James, Chris winning both 15/10. Some great rallies and very entertaining stuff. Chris won 3-0 (15/13, 15/10, 15/10).
Congratulations to all our finalists and particularly to Chris Patrick for making it 4 in a row (equalling Gary McIlree’s 4 in a row!). Thanks to our referees for the matches, Alan Marshall in the Junior 3/4 playoff, Michael Grant in the Plate final and Frank Hynds for the Senior Final.
Eleven year old Cameron performed extremely well and beat J Thibault (Fra) in the first round, G Michel (Fra), in the second round, S Wagner (Fra) in the quarter finals then lost to G Stokman 2-6, 4-6 (Ned) in the semi-finals. Stokman went on to win the tournament. Cameron also went on to reach the semi-finals of the doubles with Aidan McHugh narrowly losing to Purrer & Wagner (FRA) 3-6, 6-0, 10-6.
The weekly summer tennis coaching programme is underway at Strathgryffe and bookings are now being taken for the Summer Holiday Camps for July & August. Members & non-members are welcome.

The Club is always looking for new members. With its new state of the art artificial grass playing surface, floodlit courts, social calendar and extremely competitive rates joining Kilmacolm Tennis Club is a very tempting proposition for tennis players old and new. Giulio Spella our Club Coach runs coaching sessions throughout the year for members and non members. In addition to this the Club gives a high priority to ensuring new members are well received into the Club. Give us a try and come along to one of our Wednesday evening or Saturday afternoon Social Tennis Sessions, or to one of Giulio’s coaching sessions.
