Birkmyre Rugby

The 20010/2011 season has now fi nished and it has proved to be very successful one for Birkmyre Rugby Club. Following promotion last summer from West league division 3 to division 2, the club have fi nished a very creditable 3rd in this higher league; and until the last 2 weeks of the season were in contention as both potential champions and for promotion. A slip up away to a very strong Mull team unfortunately fi nished off our aspirations. However in our fi nal game against Clydesdale we recorded a 44 points to 17 victory to fi nish off the season in style.

Nevertheless President Willie Carruth praised the efforts made by the team and the club as a whole. He also made special comment on the excellent work that the mini rugby coaches do on behalf of the club, where our players of the future receive an excellent introduction to the game. John Ferguson gave an excellent report on the successes of mini rugby teams who regular play against and win over clubs from higher divisions.

The annual awards were presented on the evening by ex Scotland internationals and friends of the club Sandy Carmichael and Derek Stark; with the former receiving a standing ovation to commemorate his induction this year to the Scottish Rugby Hall of Fame. There was also recognition of the fact that Birkmyre Rugby Club were awarded the “October 2010 SRU club of the month” award. We are one of the very few regional teams from the west of Scotland to achieve this accolade. The individual award winners for the 2010/2011 season were as follows: Player of the Year: Gareth Henry; Most Improved player of the year: Ruaridh Pinkerton; Club Man of the year: Willie Carruth; Social Man of the Year: Jo Jo Cawte; Golf outing winner: Willie Carruth; Club service recognition: Cliff Law; 1st Captains prize: Gareth Henry.

In addition to this the following appointments have been made for next season. The team will be led on the fi eld by Gordon Stein and Jonathan Smiley will again act as vice captain. We are also fortunate to be able to announce that the current coaching team of John Black and Iain Forster will also be continuing in their posts.

Time now for a rest? Well maybe not. Touch rugby now continues every Tuesday night at the park at 7.30pm; all members, friends and willing participants welcome. Pre season training will start in early July. For further information, please contact Peter Haveron on 07815 090839.

Knapps Angling Club - Centenary Fishing Day

On the 6th of May, twenty fi ve members of the club met at the Clubhouse beside the loch in order to commemorate the Centenary of the day the very fi rst fl y was cast on the Knapps Loch which was made in 1911. The Centenary President, Quintin J McClymont, made the inaugural cast [pictured]

The fl y-fi shing contest, on June 11th, will see anglers at 11 or venues across Scotland compete to hook one of four tagged fi sh. Each tag will correspond to a prize of either £200, £300 or £500 in vouchers, which can be exchanged for fi shing gear at the Glasgow Angling Centre – although one tag will lead to a booby prize. There will also be prizes for the heaviest bag of fi sh and the biggest fi sh. The angler who brings along the most sponsorship money on the day of the event will win the prize of a days’ fi shing with Paul Young (pictured left). Local fi sheries taking part include Springwater Fishery, Dalrymple, Ayrshire. All

those taking part in the event must raise at least £50 in sponsorship.

For more information, or to register, visit www.macmillan.org.uk/ thebigfi sh, email fi shing@macmillan.org.uk or call 0800 064 9999

A barbecue was laid on together with refreshments & it was rumoured that a few drams were taken! The day was a great success, so much so that it may well become an annual event in the Club’s calendar.

The fi shing was good with the loch being in ideal condition & the weather overcast with a light breeze. A good few fi sh were taken from both the bank & the boat. Appropriately, it was the President with the top catch of seven trout, all of which were carefully returned to the loch.
