The 2011 Johnstone Rotary Club Young Designer Competition

Three of the successful young designers joined us for lunch when they were presented with their certifi cates by President Dr Peter Stromberg. Unfortunately, Laura Allen was unable to attend as she was sitting an examination.

Our thanks to all school staff whose enthusiastic support and co-operation in running these events is very important to us.

Following the presentations, we were entertained with a very interesting talk on Greyhound Racing by Alan McCaw, owner of A A Bakers in Linwood, who owns and races greyhounds and is a professional trainer at Shawfi eld Stadium. Alan told us of depictions of greyhound type dogs dating back some 4,000 years and the very long history of the sport in Europe where, until the early 20th century, the sport consisted of hare coursing. Modern greyhound racing, using a mechanical hare, developed in the 1920s and the fi rst British stadium was opened at Belle Vue in Manchester in 1926. Alan gave us many humorous tales of racing incidents and his much appreciated talk attracted many questions. Visiting Rotarian Colin Laird also spoke, briefl y, on the forthcoming Rotary District 1230 Annual Conference which this year is being organised by the Erskine Club and will be held at the end of September in the Atholl Palace Hotel in Pitlochry. Colin gave the programme of events, list of speakers and planned entertainment.

Congratulating outgoing president Jenifer McFarlane and members on a successful year of service, Sue Williams challenged everyone present to Do one more thing, in each area of the clubs activities in the coming year.

Enterprise Week in Langbank Primary

We held a highly successful Enterprise Week in April to promote the world of work and fi nancial education with our pupils. Primaries 1-4 met with the police and the fi re service - they were delighted to sit up in the fi re engine and even got to soak the cars with the hoses.

All classes had input from the Royal Bank of Scotland’s fi nancial education service where the pupils learned about the importance of saving and handling money. We had a presentation from Renfrewshire Credit union which we will get up and running in the new session.

The highlight of the week was our Business Engagement Afternoon where we invited 15 business partners to be interviewed by the pupils. A series of questions were drawn up by the children and answers recorded. This gave the children a most useful insight into the different careers that they may like to consider in the future. Business partners included the Royal Navy, Strathclyde Fire and rescue, SSPCA, Credit Union, Expressive Arts Coordinator, local dentist, minister, Hewlett Packard, Ingliston Equestrian Centre, Langbank village Store and many others. The children also presented the work of the school to the partners and they were entertained with poetry and singing. An excellent afternoon.
