St Fillan’s Primary

Our P7 pupils thoroughly enjoyed their recent residential trip to Lockerbie Manor. They will be getting back into rehearsal mode for their school show “Cinderella & Rockerfella” which they will perform to their parents on 21st June. P7 are also attending their various high schools for their induction days this month and will be preparing to fl y the nest before we know it. Enjoy your last term boys and girls - it’ll fl y in! We look forward to welcoming our new parents and pupils at our induction days which take place on 1st June & 8th June (2pm for both).

The rest of the school are also busy with Primaries 1 and 2 exploring Healthy Eating as part of their work on Health & Wellbeing. They went outdoors and planted lettuces in the school garden (see photo below) so they hope to be harvesting them soon. Primary 2 are enjoying working with Miss Docherty and are spending a lot of time outdoors as part of their active learning. Primary 3 recently handled ancient artefacts from Egypt on their recent museum trip. A wonderful time was had by all and they were commended by museum staff for their in-depth knowledge on all things Egyptian. Many of the pupils in our Primary 4 class received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion recently. A beautiful service was enjoyed by all who attended - well done P4 - you were superb! Our Primary 5 class are currently preparing to visit a local farm to see how they make their own ice cream & hand made chocolates. This is an end of year treat for working so hard on their “Willy Wonka” project last term. They will be able to look at health & hygiene when preparing food, as well as exploring how small businesses market their goods & products to the public. Primary 6 were delighted to learn that their teacher, Mrs McPherson gave birth to a beautiful, baby girl. Both are now home and doing well whilst Primary 6 continue to work hard for Mrs Power.

Good luck to the four P7 pupils who will represent our local area in the Rotary Club Quiz (national heats). They hope to take on other teams from around Scotland & make Renfrewshire proud. The school garden is now fully stocked with fruit bushes and many different types of vegetable plant. The children are looking forward to watching the fruit and veg grow. There was great excitement last week when the fi rst gooseberries were spotted on the bushes in one of the raised beds. Well done to the pupils who recently took part in the recent Basketball Tournament (P4) and Houston Relay Race (P6). Work on the underpasses has begun with the “Under the Sea” beginning to take shape. The pupils from Primary 7 took part in a joint art project with the P7 pupils from Houston primary to create many scenes they thought the community might enjoy. We’re looking forward to getting out to help paint the murals and seeing our artwork come together.

Finally we had our Football Awards Ceremony recently. Congratulations go to our school team who scooped fi rst place in the Football League this year. Well done boys - a great result in a nail-biting fi nal which went to right down to penalty shoot-outs! Many thanks for those who give up their valuable time week after week to help out with training, coaching and taking the pupils to the matches. All the hard work has really paid off with a well-deserved result.

The Club runs from 7.45am– 6pm daily. Morning/afternoon sessions can also be accommodated. The Club costs £90 for 5 days, or £22 per day and £11 for a half day session.

Kilmacolm Scouts

Kilmacolm Scouts have had a busy time. Recently they rode an amazing 368 miles in 24 hours on the static bike at the village centre. This raised money for a local charity and for the Scout group. We are very grateful to all our supporters, including the Cargill Centre, Jenny Duncan and everyone who helped run the event, cycled for us and donated money. We are fast approaching our next camp at Everton with the whole group. Lots of very excited young people eager to spend a night out in the wilds.

If you are interested

in

spending a few voluntary hours as assistant leaders

with us in any of the sections, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts please do get in contact. It is a great boost to your CV. Soon we will be planning for an Explorer section and will be looking for leaders to help run this too.

Thank you for your continued support. Houston Primary School

Another busy school year is drawing to an end and although budget cuts and hard fi nancial restraints have made it more challenging than usual, thanks to the co- operation of staff, enthusiastic pupils and very supportive parents and friends, we have enjoyed a successful year.

The annual BBQ is always a popular event and it takes place on the 3rd June. If you are a parent willing to help in some way please make contact with the school offi ce.

Our Summer Concert is scheduled for the 22nd June and parents we can look forward to an enjoyable musical experience.

A very special evening will be the P7 leavers dance on Monday 27th June. This is the occasion when our top class boys have the opportunity to swirl their kilts of many clans and the girls to turn on the glamour with their special hair do’s, glistening accessories and perhaps one or two tiaras. P7 also have the annual week of activities at Loch Insh both on and off the water, which took place at the end of May.

It is too soon to report in detail, but we are sure that canoeing, k ayak ing, windsurfing, sa ilin g, mountain biking, archery etc, all under the supervision of professionals, with caring staff members at hand, was thoroughly enjoyable!

Sports Day was on the 11th May, followed by our nursery Sports day, with the usual races and competitive activities and on the same theme of keeping fi t and maintaining good healthy habits. Health Week was also organised for the same week with a variety of activities covering a wide range of health matters involving the whole school. Grateful thanks are due to Miss Wilson for her meticulous organisation and the volunteers who gave of their skills and time to make the week enjoyable and informative for the children.

On the Thursday 30th June we will be having our Valedictory Service in Houston & Killallan Kirk at 10am, followed by refreshments in the school for P7 families and invited guests. School closes on Friday 1st July at 1pm.
