Langbank’s VOLCANO Bench

Villagers will have perhaps noticed a new bench in the Church Car Park next to the bus stop. This has been put there by the VOLCANO group who were established in 1999 to help Langbank celebrate the Millennium event in 2000. VOLCANO was the catchy name taken and it stands for the Village of Langbank Community and Neighbourhood Organisation. The group fundraised for the Millennium and ran dances, cheese and wine and many other events leading up to the Gala Day when the Cairn was sealed in the fi eld behind the station. Some funds were left over and the remaining members of the Volcano Committee decided to put a bench in the village.

Saturday 18th June • Bishopton Gala Day gets underway at 12noon with the Grand Parade leaving Bishopton Primary School, Old Greenock Road. It follows a route through the village to the ‘ROF‘ Field, Greenock Road. The theme for the parade is ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’ and villagers are invited to decorate a fl oat and take part in it. There are prizes to be won for the best fl oats and fancy dress. The Gala Day will offi cially be opened at 12.45pm by Bishopton Princess Rebecca Mitchell (pictured above). There will be a variety of entertainment in the main arena, on the stage and around the fi eld. It will include Peter Bowsher’s world class chain-saw wood carving display; a static bird of prey display; an equestrian display; the Glennifer Dog Agility Club display; children’s races organised by Bishopton Primary Parent Council; live bands; Kilbarchan Pipe Band; Scottish Wrestling Alliance display; a knobbly knees competition; prize giving; pony rides; beer garden; tea tent; Aquaspheres; football display; and Bishopton Rugby Club display. Plus there will be all the usual stalls, some giving a chance for participants to demonstrate their skills with chances to win prizes; bouncy castles and other infl atables and a climbing wall. In fact something for all the family.

Bishopton Art Group is also holding an exhibition throughout the week within the village library during normal opening hours.

Events are organised by the Bishopton Week Group, made up of local volunteers. They are hoping that the events that have been lined up will be fully supported by the local and neighbouring communities. Ronnie Dukes, Chairman of Bishopton Week Group said, “Bishopton Week is now in its 39th year and is eagerly awaited by everyone in the village. I hope that everything will be supported as there is something for everyone. We are always on the lookout for volunteers and if you want to help please email me at bishopton-day@hotmail.co.uk We also have a website www.bishoptonday.com and more information about our village fete can be found there.”

“To ease traffi c congestion around the fete, if you can walk to the fete please consider doing so.”

Pictured seated on the new bench are Mrs Ena Bell, Mrs Betty McNeill and Mrs Fiona Guthrie. The bench bears the VOLCANO inscription and Mrs Guthrie explained that as it is of very solid construction with the planks made from recycled materials it needs no upkeep and will defi nitely last for many years.

VOLCANO still exists as a group and are ready when the village has a need for them to step in.
