Kilmacolm Friends of Ardgowan Hospice

Thanks to everyone who supported the stall at the Agricultural Show on May 14th. The committee is most grateful for the generous donations of baking and bottles. The excellent total of £1,959 was raised.

I was very happy to see my SNP colleague Derek MacKay MSP being elected for the Renfrewshire North and West constituency at the Scottish Parliamentary Elections which also takes in Kilmacolm and Quarrier’s Village. Derek has been a hard working councillor since being elected to Renfrewshire Council in 1999 and he became council leader at the 2007 council elections. Derek will serve his constituents very well and I look forward to working with him in representing the constituents of Kilmacolm and Quarrier’s Village.

It was with great sadness that David Cairns MP passed away last month. David’s untimely death left us all shocked. He was a hard working politician who had the respect of politicians from all political parties. David and I may not have agreed on all things, and we shared a bit of banter from time to time, but he was a decent and good man who will be missed by many in our community. Our condolences go to his partner, family and colleagues.

Last month’s Kilmacolm Community Council (at the end of April) was very well attended. There must have been about 50 people in attendance. I believe most of the residents attending the meeting were there to discuss and hear about the item regarding the new MUGA facility at Birkmyre Park. One of the council’s senior officials attended the meeting to discuss residents concerns and to try and allay their fears. As I wrote in the May edition of the Advertizer, the MUGA is a new facility and we must hope that the problems that have occurred to date are only teething problems and can be sorted out when “ownership” for the new facility is better established.

Last month I attended a meeting for the new shared campus for Port Glasgow and I was pleased to get a progress report from officials and to learn that everything is still on target for the new Port Glasgow High, St Stephen’s High, Additional Support Needs schools and Enterprise Centre. When the new campus is completed in 2013 I am sure we will have three of the best schools in Scotland sharing the same campus, a campus that will also be able to be used by our wider community.

Recently I had the good fortune to attend several school events which included the St Stephen’s High School 6th year graduation ceremony and mass, Port Glasgow High School music night and St Stephen’s High School 50th year anniversary mass at St John’s Church. It was a pleasure being able to share in the various schools celebrations.

My next surgeries in June are on Friday 3rd at the New Kilmacolm Community Centre from 3pm - 4pm and Wednesday 15th at Newark Primary School, Port Glasgow from 5.30pm - 6.30pm. Anyone wanting to contact me can do so by phoning me at my council office on 01475-712727 or on my mobile phone 07747 765839, or by emailing me at: jim.macleod@inverclyde.gov. uk or writing to me at Inverclyde Council, Municipal Buildings, Clyde Square, Greenock, PA15 1LY.

Quarriers Village Kids Return To Their Roots

Scottish social care charity, Quarriers is bringing alive the life, time and work of it’s founder William Quarrier to a group of local children through a generous grant of £6,600 awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

Together with

the 1st Quarriers’ Village Scout Group (45th Greenock and District), Quarriers is

transporting

around 30 children and young people back in time to learn about the history that surrounds them in Quarriers Village and it’s relevance for their lives today.

All the children and young people are proud members of Quarriers Village Scout Group and live in Quarriers village and surrounding areas. During the Easter holidays the Scouts have been taking part in interactive workshops and are bringing their learning to life through producing a short film and exhibition.

The film and exhibition will be shown at Scotland Street School Museum later this year as part of Quarriers 140th anniversary celebrations.

Group Scout Leader Martin Buchan said: “The Group was delighted to be approached about this project from Quarriers and the funding made available from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have not only learned a lot about the life of children who lived in the orphan homes, but they were able to really discover what life must have been like through drama workshops.”

Michael Lewis, Quarriers Service Manager said: “2011 sees the 140th anniversary of the work of William Quarrier. We’re absolutely delighted to be sharing our heritage with children who live in Quarriers Village. We’re very grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for making all of this possible and thank the local Scouts Group for getting involved in this exciting project.”
