Renfrewshire Golf Union - Hard Luck Story at County Championships

The first tournaments of the season were held at Cochrane Castle Golf Club. The events were the Youth County Stroke Play Championship and the Junior Stroke Play Championship.

In the Youth section, Darren Jones of Elderslie had a hole in one at the 17th which is called “Hard Luck” and this became true when, despite this bonus, he failed to make the leader board. In the morning round, Sam Binning of Ranfurly Castle set the pace with an opening 71. This was closely followed by Paisley’s Jack Bradley with 72 and Mark Scanlan of Greenock with 74. The final order did not change as both Jack and Mark slipped to an afternoon 75 leaving Sam to coast home by four shots with a second round of 72 for 143.

The juniors had a similar pattern with the morning leaders retaining the same position at the end of the day. Stuart Watt of Old Ranfurly posted a morning 71 followed by 76 for 147. In second place was Greg Paterson from neighbouring club, Ranfurly Castle who shot 73 and 76 for a 149 total. In third place was John Scott of East Renfrewshire who recently had a great run at the Boys’ Match Play at Dunbar. He had a very respectable total of 141. The top sixteen in each competition go forward to the respective Match Play Championship.

Area Championship Team Announced

Renfrewshire Golf Union’s “A” team captain, Ronnie Clark, has announced the team which has been entrusted to maintain the high standards achieved by previous teams in the Scottish Area Team Championship. Over the past three years, the Renfrewshire team has reached the final at each of the Championships and became Scottish Champions in 2009 at Crail Golf Club.

The chosen players are: Sam Binning – Ranfurly Castle. Matt Clark – Kilmacolm. Ronnie Clark - Erskine. Andy Farmer - Kilmacolm. Gordon Stevenson - Whitecraigs. Craig Watson - East Renfrewshire.

Youth player Sam Binning will be making his first appearance in the Area Team Championship and Ronnie Clark said that his selection was based on a combination of a sound season in 2010 and a start to the 2011 season which includes an opening round of 67 at the Champion of Champions at Leven and the equalling of the Ranfurly Castle Golf Club course record of 64. He said “The team selection is a gradual inclusion of youth to compliment the obvious experience”

This year it is likely that North East, last year’s champions, and Ayrshire with 2011 Scottish Match Play winner David Wilson on its team will be the teams to beat.

The final of the 2011 Renfrewshire Golf Union Boys’ Champion of Champions took place at Paisley Golf Club between Alasdair McDougall - Elderslie Golf Club and Paul Reilly - Lochwinnoch Golf Club.

Alasdair had faced Gourock’s David Slack in the semi final and won 2 and 1. Paul’s semi final opponent was Josh Bogle of Ranfurly Castle and that contest ended with Paul 2 up.

In a keenly contested match played in tricky windy conditions Paul defeated Alasdair by 3 and 1. Alasdair opened brightly and was 2 up after 3 holes. However a mixture of mistakes by Alasdair and birdies by Paul saw Paul 1 up on the 9th tee. The hole was birdied by Alasdair and the game was all square at the turn.

The 13th and 14th holes were to prove decisive as Paul’s par and birdie put him two up with four to play. The 15th was halved in par and both players had fine birdies on the 16th. Alasdair could not fight back and the game ended on the 17th green. The game was played in great spirit with Paul being one under par for the round. Both boys are a credit to Renfrewshire Golf and we shall

certainly hear more of both of them in the future. Reported by Don Bremner
