Bridge of Weir Gala Week


Saturday 11th June: Gala Day • Parade from Cargill Hall to Houston Rd Park . Judging of entries takes place at 11.45am (prompt), prior to the Parade leaving at 12noon.


• Activities at Houston Road Park from 12noon - Tombola, Football, Beat the goalie, Face-painting, Charity stalls, Kid’s rides, Bouncy Castle, Clown, Falconry, Dancers, Pipe-bands, Tea tent, Hamburgers, Hot Doughnuts, plus lots more... Compered as usual by Steve Roberts (Corporate Management Events) with a special guest on the day.


• Dog Show from 1-3.30pm (register at 11.30am). Winner receives the “Kerr Veterinary Trophy” and reserve best in show receives the “Liburn Memorial Cup”.


• Lucky programme (sponsored by Gibb Stuart) drawn at 3.30pm.


Sunday 12th June • Gala Praise for the Family at St Machar’s Ranfurly Church.


Monday 13th June • Kid’s Fun night with “Uncle Billy”, for Primary School age at the Freeland Church Hall. From 7pm to 9pm, entry £1.


Tuesday 14th June • Football Fiesta in Houston Road Park from 6.45pm. 5-a-side football fun night in three sections: P6/7, S1/2, S3/4.


Wednesday 15th June • Family Fun Night at the Cargill Hall, from 6.30-8pm, organised by The Hope Hall. Fantastic games, singing, bible story and quiz. Refreshments provided. Admission free for all the family.


• Family BBQ at The Weir , from 6pm onwards. Drinks promotions and live entertainment. Free entry.


Thursday 16th June • Children’s Magic Show at 10am in Bridge of Weir Primary School. Free entry and all village playgroups are most welcome.


• Tea Dance – in The Royal British Legion Scotland 2-4pm, with entertainment by Jim Inglis. £2 tickets for the Committee, or pay at the door.


• Prize Bingo at The Royal British Legion Scotland. Eyes down 7.30pm. Light buffet. £2 entry at the door.


Friday 17th June • Kid’s Disco by “FunkieDivaDisco” from 7-9pm at the Cargill Hall. Age limit 7yo to 12yo, entry £1 at the door.


Saturday 18th June • End of Festival CEILIDH in the Cargill Hall from 7.30pm till late. Music by “The Reel Fling”, Light Buffet and Late Bar. Entry by ticket only, £10 from the Committee.


The Bridge of Weir Gala Committee would like to apologise to Houston Rd Kiosk, Globe Bingo, Bridge of Weir Primary School, Beaton Bros, Blackstock & Company Ltd and Bridge of Weir Scouts for not including them within the “Thank You List” at the back of the Gala Programme. How could we forget the Scouts who ably support Gala Day every year by cooking hundreds of hamburgers, it just wouldn’t be the same without them.

Local author, Rosemary Gemmell


Local author, Rosemary Gemmell, saw her debut novel published during the fi rst week of May 2011. Dangerous Deceit is a historical romance set in Regency England. It is full of romantic intrigue, with spies and villains, and a tangled web of deception that puts the heroine, Lydia, in danger. Dangerous Deceit is under the name Romy Gemmell, to differentiate it from her other writing and is published by Champagne Books in Canada. It is available as an e-book from www.champagnebooks.com, www.amazon.co.uk (for kindle) and other e-book stores. The print version will be available in a few months.


Rosemary has been a freelance writer for several years, with many short stories and articles published in a variety of UK magazines, in the USA and online. One of her stories was included in the International charity fundraising book, ‘100 Stories for Haiti’, and three of her children’s stories are published in different anthologies. She has also won several prizes.


Another prize-wining short story has just been published in the ‘Waterloo Collection’, an anthology of adult and children’s stories launched by Professor Richard Holmes in aid of ‘Project Hougoumont’, as part of the fundraising to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo in 2015.


Rosemary also writes children’s novels and Summer of the Eagles, a novel for ages 10-14, has recently been accepted by another Canadian publisher and is scheduled for release next spring. She is a long-time member of Erskine Writers, and also belongs to the Scottish Association of Writers, the Romantic Novelists’ Association and the Society of Authors.
