Howwood Fete Saturday 18th June

Plans are well underway for our Fete Day. We know that seems ages away, but there is a lot of planning to get through to ensure a fun-filled day for everyone.

So, can you help? We need as many helpers as possible to set up gazebos and tables, etc. If you could give up an hour or two on the day, please contact Bill David on 01505 703500. Or if you would like to have a stall at the fete, please contact Bill and give him your details.

Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you on the big day!

Elderslie Kirk Lunch Club

The Lunch Club meets in the Hall attached to the Kirk on Mondays from 12noon to 2pm. The menu consists of soup and toasties, with some entertainment thrown in for good measure, all for the pricely sum of £2.

Howwood WRI held their AGM on April 19th in Howwood Village Hall. Mr Boatman gave a talk and slide show on garden plants and members were offered advice on growing them. A mini-show was held and very well supported by members.

Winner of the baking and preserves class was Irene Mactaggart.

Winner of the craft section was Gail Gilchrist. Gail also won the Trophy for overall winner in the show.

The monthly competition prize winners were Isobel Brochett and Jane Millar.

Our new session starts on September 20th at 7.30pm in Howwood Village Hall and new members are very welcome.

Glasgow Wind Band Concert

Perform in Howwood Parish Church, Main Rd, Howwood on Friday 10th June at 7.30pm.

At long last the summer is here and hopefully it will be a good one .

As usual the people involved in the village community are working hard to make sure the Howwood fete is a success. Having being involved in the running of fete s myself I know how much work is involved. So, I wish them every success and hopefully everything goes well and the sun is shining on the 18th June .

Congratulations to Hugh Henry on his recent election victory. Hugh works extremely hard for his constituents and will serve the people of Howwood well .

My surgeries at the Village Hall in Howwood seem to have got busier in the last few months. They are held on the 4th Friday of every month 5.30pm - 7pm. So if there is anything I can help you with I would be delighted to see you .

Finally, is there anybody out there interested in taking over the village pitch. I think it is underused and with the right level of investment it could be a great facility . Let me know what you think.

Work on improving council housing in Renfrewshire

is ongoing, with contracts for roofing works in Johnstone and the villages being approved recently by the council’s housing board. This will help bring our houses up to the Scottish Housing Quality Standard.

A recent report highlighted the high levels of debt within various areas of Scotland. SNP led Renfrewshire Council has consistently provided support to those in debt, either through our own dedicated resources such as Advice Works and events such as Renfrewshire Money Week, or by funding the local Citizen Advice Bureau. Renfrewshire Council has a good record in providing support to those in most need. Advice Works have assisted new benefit claims amounting to over £8.5million and managing over £13million of new debt. It is important to get advice early and make sure you claim what you are entitled to. If you would like assistance to check your benefit entitlement or complete applications please do not hesitate to contact me.

I have also been made aware of bogus callers within the ward recently particularly in the villages. I would urge you to contact the police if you see any suspicious individuals. Many have been cold calling at houses offering to carry out work so be aware and look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours.

There has been some confusion over the new policy on community facilities and football pitches. I have already arranged a meeting in Howwood where officers were able to give advice on funding and also on making sure that everyone who is eligible applies for the concessionary rate. If you are having any problems with this then please get in touch.
