Hair shaving challenge raises vital funds for Erskine veterans
A secondary pupil has proven he is a cut above the rest after taking part in a sponsored head shave in aid of the country’s veterans.
Ryan Nisbet, a 6th year pupil at Park Mains High School, cut off his long locks recently to raise vital funds for the ex-Service men and women cared for by the veterans’ charity Erskine.
The 17-year-old from Bishopton had been growing his hair for nearly three years until he shaved it off during his school lunch break recently. He charged his fellow pupils 50pence to come along to the school’s theatre to watch his heroic act.
His valiant effort raised over £1,000 for Erskine which provides care and employment opportunities for veterans across Scotland. Ryan choose the veterans’ charity to benefit from his fundraising because he is proud of the work the Armed Forces carry out and feels it is important to support both serving personnel and veterans in any way he can.
Ryan said: “I am aware that the service personnel who need Erskine’s services cover a huge range of ages from WWII veterans to younger service men and women due to the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and I believe it is important that they get the specialist care they need. I wanted to do what I could to support them
and thought this was an ideal way.
“I was quite nervous on the day of the head shave, but I was looking forward to raising a lot of money. I liked having long hair and I will miss it but I am delighted that I have managed to help Erskine. Thank you to my fellow pupils, friends and family who sponsored me.”
Angela Nisbet, Ryan’s mum, added: “Our family is delighted with the amount Ryan has raised and we are very proud of him for doing this for Erskine.”
Lesley Miller, Erskine’s Deputy Head of Fundraising, said: “Ryan has shown true courage to cut off his hair after such a long period of time. We are delighted that he completed this challenge to raise money for those ex- Service men and women cared for by the veterans’ charity Erskine. Without the support of individuals such as Ryan we would not be able to provide the care these men and women so richly deserve.”
Following his challenge Ryan sent his hair off to a charity to be made into a wig.

Help make a little girl’s dream come true
Keanna McMillan is a 4 year old girl who lives in Bridge Of Weir with her mum Roslyn, dad Thomas and big brother Kayden.
Keanna suffers from a form of Cerebral Palsy called spastic diplegia, which causes the muscles in her legs to be very tight. Her family are helping her dream come true by trying to raise enough money to take her to America for a life changing operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (sdr). The reason for having it done in America is because it is not readily available in the UK.
The family are trying to raise £40,000 which covers the operation, along with a month long stay in America and the essential aftercare. This is a huge amount but Keanna hopes with everyone’s help her dream will come true.
Keanna’s family have organised a Charity Night on Saturday 25th June in the Royal British Legion in Bridge of Weir, at 7pm. The night will be a 60’s 70’s disco with auction, raffle and buffet, great prizes! Tickets cost £10. We are really hoping for a great turnout as we need to raise as much awareness & money as possible to help this little girl’s dream come true.
