Satellite TV systems can be installed on just about any vehicle or boat. SATELLITE TV F.A.Qs

How hard is it to use satelliteTV in a vehicle or boat? Many people will tell you that setting up digital satellite TV is difficult. However, if you have the right equipment, the correct information and a little bit of patience for the first time you set your system up, it's easy. After a bit of practice, setting up a Multimo, for example, lining it up with the satellite and settling

back to watch TV need take no more than a minute or two. If you go abroad and depending on the equipment you’re using, it may be necessary to make adjustments to your satellite receiver and your dish. But these are not difficult, not

complicated and anyway, if you buy a satellite set-up from RoadPro or one of our dealers, you’ll get instructions showing exactly what you need to do.

How much does it cost? Buying a complete satellite set-up for your caravan or motorhome can cost under £150.00 for a manual system and more than £2,000.00 for an automatic one.

Will this dish work in France, Italy, Spain, etc, etc?

It all depends on what you mean by “will it work?” Any satellite dish will pick up something no matter where you are. However, it may not be what you want to watch. Just because you can watch BBC on your SKY digibox at home, it doesn’t mean you can get it in Benidorm. To find out which dish picks up what channels where, take a look at the footprint maps on the product pages of our website.

What can I get in Spain & Portugal? A nice paella and a bottle of cheap red wine for a start.

150 miles or so south of Barcelona you can forget about watching BBC and ITV unless you have a dish of at least 1M

diameter, and even 1.5M, 2M or bigger in some areas. With a smaller dish you will still be able to watch CNN, Sky News and many of the less well-known channels and you’ll also be able to listen to most of the BBC’s radio stations. See our footprint maps to get an idea of what size dish is needed where. Having said this, we have found that, in some parts of southern Spain, the Algarve and western Portugal a large mobile dish such as a Kathrein CAP 910 or Camos 80cm SkySearcher will receive BBC & ITV. We don’t know why this should be - it shouldn’t happen: but it does and that’s that. However, the signal is weak and is likely to be affected by rain, thick cloud and even the time of day. The satellite signals from Astra 2 get weaker as the sun goes down.

What channels can I get with satellite TV?

Just about every channel that’s broadcast is available via satellite but which ones you can actually receive will depend on where you are, what equipment you’re using and whether or not you are prepared to pay.

What channels can I get without paying? Free to view channels change all the time: they come, they go! However many of the channels which are broadcast on SKY are available without any payment including: BBC 1, 2, 3 & 4, BBC

Then there are numerous religious, shopping, travel and music channels as well as speciality channels such as Information TV

and Horse & Country TV. Dozens of radio stations are also transmitted unencrypted by satellite including most of the BBC's. There are quite a few English-speaking channels on other satellites and, if you have a suitable receiver and dish, you will be able to watch Fox News, Bloomberg and more channels which are broadcast on the Hotbird and Astra 19 satellites.

Can I get Freeview channels via satellite?

All the channels that are available on Freeview are also transmitted via satellite.

Can I use a “Freeview” receiver for satellite TV?

No, a “Freeview” receiver cannot be used to receive satellite TV. It must be used with a terrestrial aerial.

What can I get on freesat? freesat has been set up to provide a range of TV and radio

channels which are all free to view. These include all the regular channels from BBC, ITV, Channel 4 & Five and many more. freesat does not offer any subscription channels such as National Geographic or the History Channel and their policy states that they never will. What’s more, there are many more free channels available which a freesat receiver will not automatically add to its E.P.G. (electronic programme guide) See the next question for more info.

freesat uses special receivers and its own E.P.G. When you install

a freesat receiver it will be set up to take your home location into consideration so that you get local TV stations which are relevant to you.

freesat also provides the opportunity to watch certain programmes in high definition, as long as you have an HD. receiver and an HD compatible TV.

What’s the difference between freesat & Free To Air?

Both services are completely free and don’t require any subscription or viewing card.

freesat is easy to use but is designed to offer only a range of channels which have signed up to the freesat “platform”. This means that, if you want to watch, for example, the Horse & Country channel, you’ll have to manually add it to the list of channels that you want to watch.

A free to air receiver will automatically bring up every available channel on its E.P.G. (including Horse & Country TV). These will include all the channels that freesat provides plus a great many

more including those from other satellites such as Hotbird and Astra 1.

In short, a freesat receiver is easy to use but has a restricted range of channels. A free to air receiver will let you access thousands of channels - including all the ones shown on freesat - but will require a certain amount of setting up favourite channel lists and

occasional downloading of updates as new channels are made available.

Can I use a satellite dish inside my caravan?

A dish such as a Multimo or Kerstan can be used inside under certain conditions. Satellite signals can pass through plastic

News 24, ITV 1, 2, 3 and 4, Channel 4 & Five, SKY News, CNN windows quite easily but not through a caravan’s roof or walls. and Film 4.

You can also use a dish inside an awning although rain on the material will reduce the signal strength.
