BATTERY-TO-BATTERY CHARGERS


Sterling originated the battery-to-battery charger in its present form and, with five models in the range, there’s a battery-to-battery charger to suit most requirements, even for 24V vehicles which have 12V auxiliary batteries.


With charging rates of up to 100 Amps, Sterling units are ideal for vehicles where there’s a high current consumption and batteries need to be recharged as quickly as possible. They can be used with any type of lead-acid battery including gel and AGM models.


As with any equipment of this kind, the closer it is to the battery that it will be charging, the better. This is necessary in order to minimize voltage-drop - see page 31.


As well as remote operation, this unit gives useful information on a charger’s performance. It can be used with all Sterling battery- to battery chargers.

Ask anyone who’s fitted a battery to battery charger to their motorhome or boat and they’ll tell you just how good they are. In fact, if you like staying in places away from mains hook-up, they can change the whole way you use your 12V power facilities. To get the best out of one of these units though, it’s necessary to take other things into consideration, especially your vehicle’s leisure batteries and the cabling which connects those batteries to the starter battery.


Unless you’ve got good batteries to start of with, a battery to battery charger may not make as much difference as you were hoping so, before you get one installed, have your batteries checked. If it turns out that new ones are recommended, buy the best you can afford (see pages 4 - 6) and you’ll have the reassurance that the charger will help to keep them in top condition whenever the engine is running.


For the unit to work correctly, it’s essential to use suitable cable. For example, the most popular Sterling Power model draws up to 45 Amps and, for that kind of current, it’s necessary to use 25mm or even 35mm cable depending on the distance between the starter battery and the charger. If inadequate cable is used, at best the charger may not work correctly and, at worst, the cables could be damaged or even catch fire! The charger itself should be sited as near the leisure batteries as possible. See the chart on page 31 for a guide to what cable you will need. The cable itself is on page 76.


Motorhomes made by some manufacturers are fitted with an electroblock which controls and monitors most or all of the electrical operations and equipment in the vehicle’s living area. A battery to battery charger will work perfectly well in such vehicles but the on-board battery monitoring facilities may not work correctly. If in doubt, please ask us or consult your dealer.
