What about regulators?
A charge regulator (or charge controller) is used to regulate the voltage and current coming from a solar panel and going to the battery. Most solar panels put out around 17 - 18 volts so, if they were connected directly, a 12V battery would be damaged. As a rule, you can get by without a regulator if your panel/s put out 2 watts or less per 50Ah of battery capacity.
There are several types of regulator and, as usual, you tend to get what you pay for. Cheap regulators will simply do the job as best as they can (not very well), whereas more expensive models will not only get more electricity into your batteries but can also have features such as charging of the starter battery as well as the domestic battery, indicator lights or an LCD display. If you are using a solar power set-up to simply keep your battery topped up, a basic regulator will probably do but, if you are aiming to use your panels to provide enough power to run your on-board electrical requirements, the price you pay for a regulator can make a huge difference to the amount of electricity that ends up in your battery.
More expensive regulators tend to use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) technology. They are more efficient than a basic regulator, continually checking the battery’s condition and “feeding” it accordingly.
The best - and most expensive - regulators use MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) to calculate how best to charge the battery. MPPT regulators can put up to 30% or more into a battery compared to a standard model. They work best in cool or cloudy conditions and when a battery is discharged but will be more efficient at all times than any other type of regulator. We recommend MPPT controllers for installations when maximum electrical output is important and especially when large (100W+) panels are being used.
