KATHREIN SATELLITE TV SYSTEMS

Like Kathrein’s other mobile satellite reception systems, the CAP 710 combines their expertise in both design and manufacture to produce a superb satellite TV system at a reasonable price. Its light weight - just 9.7 Kgs - makes it ideal in situations where weight is a consideration.

A 60cm dish, powerful motor unit and combined controller / receiver enable the CAP 710 to pick up all British TV & radio stations throughout the British Isles, Ireland, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, western Germany, Austria, northern Italy, France and north- east Spain. Beyond those areas, the CAP 710 will pick up dozens of British TV and radio channels including all main BBC radio stations.

The H.D. Receiver enables reception of dozens of different satellites and up to 4,000 channels. Two common access slots are provided so that subscription cards (not SKY cards) can also be used. This receiver also acts as the system’s controller, saving space and ensuring a neat and tidy installation. The system is simple to operate via the on-screen display and even a first-timer should be able to use the system within minutes of installation.

These maps show the areas of coverage given by Kathrein CAP 610 and CAP 710 satellite systems. They are based on the official footprints supplied by the satellite operators, results gained by RoadPro during extensive testing and reports from other users. They should be used as a guide only as a satellite’s transmission footprint can change at any time and without warning. For more information on satellite footprints, see page 44.

Russel Whiteley lives virtually full-time in his Swift Kon-Tiki and has tried a number of different satellite TV systems. His CAP 900 has the same performance as the newer CAP 910 which comes with an updated HD receiver / controller. This report is as he sent it to us and reflects his experiences, not any claims made by Kathrein or RoadPro.

I recently changed the self seek satellite system on my motorhome to the Kathrein CAP 900 as I was looking for increased reception and coverage of the ASTRA2D channels whilst overseas.

Our trip to northern Italy in July was a good test for the system as not only is Italy south of the UK, but also further east, really pushing us to the limit of the reception area for ASTRA2D channels whilst using a sensibly sized dish. Parked at Lake Garda, the Kathrein soon locked on to the satellite and in no time at all, BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and the usual channels were available. Interestingly, even at night time, the picture did not pixelate and break up. The Kathrein CAP 900 is the only system I know that can perform in this manner during the late evening in Northern Italy. I do not know why the time of day can affect the performance of a satellite dish and receiver, but it can, as can the weather!

A few weeks later and we were off to Santa Susanna in northern Spain. Arriving late at our overnight stop in Millau, we pitched right next to the river, but sadly under a heavy covering of trees. I was not even going to try to use the Kathrein CAP 900 in this location, but my travelling companion did want to watch Emmerdale! I pressed the button and was amazed - despite the coverage of trees, the Kathrein locked on. Moments later we had a knock on the door from a fellow motorhomer asking how we had achieved this. We were in the south of France, under trees and then later experienced heavy rain - but Emmerdale was uninterrupted!

On then to Santa Susanna in Spain where once again our pitch was surrounded by trees! Trees and roof mounted satellite systems are not usually good friends, but encouraged by the Kathrein's performance the previous night, we gave it a try. Bingo, locked on to Astra2, with full coverage of the UK channels. A glance at the set up screen indicated about 75% signal strength and quality, suggesting that despite our southerly location, there may well be still a lot more mileage to cover before we lost the Astra channels. We are looking forward to our next trip to Spain, further down the coast where we can test this.
