People Power in the Virgin London Marathon A

fter an early shower the weather was nice for the 30th London Marathon and the power of the human spirit and sheer grit and willpower was on display

everywhere you looked.

A I

he camaraderie kicked-in the moment I caught the C2c from Upminster with the

Mass of other nervous red kitbag-toting runners making their way to Blackheath for one of the 3 starts.

he organisation and logistics are awesome, the crowd are truly wonderful; warm,

supportive, vocal and very generous with the jelly babies. In my purple butterfly wings (worn to represent “the butterfly children”: the sufferers of the life-threatening condition EB

that I was fundraising for) I had loads of support from the children lining the route and enjoyed myself high-fiveing and waving to them.

tendon injury two months before had put paid to running the 26.2 miles in any kind of fast time but a mix of running and power walking got me round in a

respectable time and I loved every minute of it. Where else do you get to pass the angel of the north, a giraffe, Richard Branson and a man with a fridge on his back in the space of a couple of hours?!

f you can spare a few pounds for Debra I would be very grateful, this small charity works to assist parents and children with this inherited disorder that

causes the skin to blister and break at the slightest touch and provides expertise and medication to make the short lives of these children as pain-free and pleasant as possible. (There is no cure currently), If you have already helped, many thanks for your support. If you are temped to give it a try I can highly recommend the experience, online entry for 2011 opens on May 4th! Kind regards, Alison Taffs

How nice to get an article (above) for our magazine from a family member. Well done Alison this is a first. We have had letters and jokes from non Rotarians but this the first actual article. If you are not a club member and you are reading this story you might feel like contributing to the next issue. Think about it. We do of course have a very strict editing code and brown envelopes are not discouraged . Only joking, don't worry about the envelope! Cheers George
