Engayne Primary School in Upminster Rotary Shelter Boxes

O T I

n Wednesday 16th. June I

went along with Eddie Truman to Engayne Primary School in Upminster to give a short talk about Rotary Shelter Boxes.

he audience was made up of pupils from Years

6, 5 ,4 and 2.After a brief introduction about the work and ideals of Rotary we went on to explain how the Shelter Box was created and how they are now distributed around the world in times of emergency.

n a question and answer session about the things we might need in an

emergency, Eddie wrote the answers on a white board and I like magician produced an item from the box that would address the problem. They were truly amazed to see the variety of items the box contained and I think the two items which impressed them the most were the tent which I held up in a carry bag (they thought it was remark- able that this tent which I was holding up in one hand could sleep 10 people) and the pack that contained pencils, pens and colouring books for the chil- dren. The little primus stove got a reasonable Ooh as well.

fter the demonstration

I asked them if they thought it would be a good idea to raise some money to buy a box which they could then track to see where it was being sent and they were very keen to do so.

e had hoped to put the tent up in the playground but a stiff breeze

and a lack of time prevented us from doing this. I had hoped I could take some photographs of children in the tent. In the end we had to be satisfied with just three children photographed with Eddie and myself and the Green Box.( There are kinds of difficulties taking photographs in schools without parental permission).

n the vote of thanks afterwards one member of staff was truly amazed at

the work being done by Rotary around the world and another member staff said that he already had several ideas for ways in which the school could raise some money.

A

ll in all it was a very satisfactory morning and the school caretaker

was extremely co-operative and helpful in transporting the very heavy box from my car to the school hall and returning it afterwards.
