Essex & Herts Air Ambulance D Speaker Rtn Dennis Rensch

ennis covered all aspects of

O D

n the 8thApril our speaker was Dennis

Rensch a Rotarian from the Brentwood a Becket Club.

ennis spoke to us about his work with

the Essex Air Ambulance Trust. His enthusiasm for his work was very obvious and he held the attention of all those pre- sent as he filled in the gaps of our rather sketchy knowledge concerning the service. For example, several of those present assumed that the Essex Air Ambu- lance service only attended emergency calls in that county whereas in fact it covers a large part of Greater London including Havering.

the service including training, running costs and the availability of the air ambulance .The trust is run entirely on public donations and the support of organisations such as Rotary is vital to the continued success of the trust. He stressed that there is no

government funding which means there is no government interference and this is the way they prefer to operate. Although the service is expensive to run, as he said, you cannot put a price on a human life and the service saves many lives each year. Due to the congestion of our major roads this service becomes even more important when the traditional road ambulance is unable to attend an emergency. Although it is a private trust the air ambulance is available to any emergency. When a 999 call is a made the person taking the call will decide, based upon

the information received, which service is best suited to deal with the situation. If the air ambulance is required the helicopter can be on the scene within minutes.

D T

ennis jokingly brought his talk to a

close by referring to „heavy lidded Rotarians‟ but this was far from the case. Such was the interest that he had created there then followed a lengthy question and answer session.

he vote of thanks was given by

Rotarian Ray Hare and the session was pleasantly concluded when PP Ron Geggus presented Dennis with a cheque for £500 (part of the proceedings of the Race Night which was held in January).
