Playathon at the Queens Theatre Saturday 3-Jul-10

I

cannot tell you what a relief it was to get the

Playathon underway at the Queens theatre on Saturday!

W

hen I arrived at the theatre just before 9am there was

already a hardy band of Rotarians on the steps just raring to get going, but unfortunately we just had to wait until the staff were ready and there was no way were we getting in before time. Just as I was beginning to get a bit twitchy and was wondering whether to run round to the Stage door on the other side of the theatre the doors were opened by a member of staff. On enquiring as to who we were he seemed to accept that the motley crew, who were mostly wearing blue shirts with the Rotary Club of

Hornchurch and Upminster logo, were in fact Rotarians who were there for the strange event called a Playathon.

U

pon entry I told him that we needed the stage, some chairs

put out, a CD player and a microphone. The young man by the name of Lee then set about the task of doing it all and would not let us put out the chairs until he had moved the settees. Without seeming to hurry he soon had it all set up and ready to go. The merry band of Rotarians set

up a table and the Rotary banner by the doors, and waited eagerly for the musicians to arrive. It was not long before the first of the children came in with their teacher and parent chaperones, and at the allotted time we started our third Playathon.

T

here then followed two hours of music provided by pupils from

Engayne Primary School, Hall Mead School and Sacred Heart of Mary Girls School. We had an interesting mixture of music with pianists, instrumentalists representing the brass, woodwind and string sections, several guitarists and

some very fine vocalists. All in all it was a very pleasant morning, which was a great relief. The kids were great, well behaved and sensible and I was delighted that the Headteacher of Engayne, Suzanne Ship, was there to support the children and the teachers of all the schools who gave up their Saturday morning to support our cause.
