Christmas Display in Upminster

Door-to-door & outside Morton & Reeves Dec-09

T

he music we nor- mally use is that

ever-popular Xmas medley played by Kenny Ball and his band. During my 1st year it was being used but the CD was lost! Dear old Subash Hora saved the day, however, as being a friend of Kenny's he made arrangements for both he and I to drive to his Stanstead home where Kenny promptly provided us with a copy from his own col- lection, and which we use now.

I

digress.... Hav- ing previously

been a member of Hornchurch Lions, where mobile street collections were their longstanding

modus operandi, I suggested this concept to our Community Service Committee who - with great abandon, enthusiasm and energy - decided it was the way forward for us as well! At this point Lew Bekkers and myself put our collective heads together, took advantage of modern devel- opments in Xmas lighting, and decided Black- pool Illuminations were to be the order of the day for our sleigh........ A budget was approved, B & Q stores were raided several times, and we undertook the transition to what we now have - i.e. a 'plug & play' unit which is easily demountable for storage and which now simply plugs together when Xmas approaches.

V

arious disasters have struck along the way - mainly associated with the music system

- but each time Lew, David or I have been able to fix it with some help from Tucker Bros, who know more about this sort of thing than any of us ever will..... Suffice it to say the sleigh is now a popular piece of kit - it is regularly requested by other local organisations and our own Inner Wheel, and this year was sited at the Upminster

8

Festival (sadly rained off after a short period of time, but that is an- other story....).

D

avid Bull and Lew Bekkers

have given gener- ously and consistently of their time in both

repairing, maintaining and indeed towing, as have a number of other members such as Gerry Harrington (apologies if I have missed out any other names here). Lew has also kindly provided us with the generator we always use and the concept has, I believe. been one of great suc- cess. Occasional shortage of members available for evening collec- tions has currently been overcome, to the extent that this year we have probably had one of our 'best' organised events (snow permit- ting). Many of our members, family and friends have come to- gether this year and we have had some of the best collections ever.... Equally, we have been beset by some atrocious weather that has both delayed and even cancelled one collection, but the final result was, I am sure you will all agree, worthy of the collective effort.

L ong may this continue. Story by Rtn Jim Haines
