Rotary to the Rescue F I

riday morning we woke to see the ground covered in snow but braving the elements

managed to get to a wholesale building supplies company in Romford and we ordered the main components needed to refurbish the kitchen. Kieron had already bought yards of piping and materials to re-board the room. Fortunately he is more than just a good DIY man and seems capable of doing almost anything I wouldn‘t even look at.

n the meantime Gerrie had taken suits and other garments to Prestige cleaners oppo- site the BP garage in Upminster and on hear- ing the story Mehmet refused to take any pay- ment. He also introduced her to a lady who owns the Tropical Launderette in Hornchurch who volunteered to wash the rest of their clothes, bedding and curtains without charge.

J

ulie London of Exel Contracts Ltd provided electrical kitchen equipment and

arranged for a gas fitter to check the installation. A firm of industrial cleaners offered their services and started cleaning away the smoke damage from the paintwork, An elderly gentleman from Harold Hill read of their plight in the local paper turned up with cooked meals for them. Rotarian Colin Coe, President of Havering East and owner of Havering Lighting put them in touch with an electrician.

K

ieron is still actively looking for em- ployment in the construction industry.

He was latterly in senior management quoting

for and supervising major building projects - including works at the Olympic development – but would now consider a more hands-on job with his initial expertise in plaster- boarding and plastering. Kirsty due to several medical conditions has been unable to work. She had been active in animal rescue through her Scruffy Angels website and is now, to- gether with Kieron, developing www.ktjdesignandbuild.co.uk a home improvement company and so they are hoping something will come up soon.

T

his experience hasn‘t yet come to an end as there is still so much to be done.

However above everything it has demonstrated how Rotary Clubs, together with individuals in the community, are quick to come to the aid of those in need. With this help Kirsty and Kieron managed to enjoy a Christmas chicken and vegetables cooked in a halogen oven bought from the donations so gratefully received. Kieron having almost finished work on the kitchen has started redecorating.

K

irsty and Kieron hope that they have written to everyone who helped but

asked me to pass on their very grateful thanks particularly to the three Clubs as they do not know how they would have coped without the wonderful support from Rotary.
