Message from our President I

am indeed fortunate to

be the current President of a Rotary Club the Members of which have once again demonstrated their commit- ment to the

Rotary motto ―service above self‖. Over the Christmas period the entertainment provided at the Old Folks Party and support for the Christ- mas collection fully demonstrated this, in the latter case despite the difficult weather condi- tions.

I I

had the pleasure of attending the quiz run by George, Sylvia and Ray for the children of

Langtons Junior School in Hornchurch on the first day of the new term. I did not think all the children would fit in the hall at once but with military procession they filed in and filled every available space and judging by the noise, enjoyed the morning event (I am sure it was more fun than school work). The Illustrated Dictionaries awarded to the winning team were well received and the Club was thanked very warmly by the head-teacher for putting on the quiz.

was very pleased that Ray Hamilton felt well enough, following his operation to join us for

the Race Night in January and once again thanks to the support provided by Fellows both in organising/ running and supporting the event, it was a great success. Thanks to Ron a number of us with our partners visited the Olympic site, a follow on from the talk given at Club and were able to gain an impression of the size And complexity of the project. Although restricted to the coach we could see that the progress made on the main venues was very impressive, the communication centre being well advanced as it must be completed ready for fit- ting out 12 months in advance of the games.

O

n both the domestic and international front the Club has responded positively with

support for the following disasters‘, the flooding in Cockermouth and the earthquake in Haiti. We have seen clear evidence from television reports

of the shelter boxes being put to good use, lines of tents with the Rotary Wheel logo, providing essential protection from the elements to those in need.

T T

he attendance of the District Governor and his wife at the recent presentation of the

sponsorship money from the walk to the Hospice was a bonus and thanks to Dick resulted in an article in the local press. Over £6000 was raised by the Fellows and supporters which I think is a magnificent achievement and I know it is very important for the continuing work of the Hospice.

he Murder Mystery evening, held at The Lodge in support of the Polio Eradication

Campaign , was supported by Chelmer Bridge, Havering East and Dagenham Clubs and with our own Members/supporters 142 attended. The proceeds from the evening with the help of the raffle will allow a donation of £700 and all those involved in arranging and running the event are to be congratulated on it‘s success. I wonder if there was a degree of type casting in the play, Geoff we see you in a new light, ladies beware! It was most unfortunate that we were unable to carry out the collection at Tesco‘s but there appear to have been a breakdown in communication within their store at Gallows Corner despite the commitment of Tesco HQ and Havering East‘s efforts.

I I am sure you will all recall the support received from Joanna Skillet at the Old Folks

Christmas party a couple of years ago and may have followed her career when she has given other performances locally. Joanna has approached the Club and requested a link between her web site and that of our Club‘s to which we have agreed. Our web master team agree that such links are a useful promotion tool for both parties and links with other charities and organisations which we support would be useful.

look forward to a full calendar of events in the coming months all of which are included

in our list of activities and would particularly ask that you support Presidents Night on Friday 14 May 2010 at the Lodge, full details to follow.
