hatever your age, you can usually, discover

something new on most days. Most times these discoveries are pretty minor but every now and again there comes along something or someone that really gets you thinking. One such person, in the shape of Harry Payne, did just that for me.

arry, who is a member of the Wickford club, is the District Trainer and for those

members who have Email, it is Harry we have to thank when we get our messages from Geoff informing us of a new item on the Web site. did not know what to expect when I attended club on the 11th.March. but boy oh boy was I

surprised by the end of the meeting. I was surprised for two reasons. Firstly by my ignorance of the vast problem that exists today and secondly by my reaction to the shocking knowledge that I had gained.

henever we have a speaker at the club I usually go home thinking about the

presentation and how clever, brave, kind or inspirational the person was. On this occasion I went home feeling quite down and rather upset.

arry‘s presentation was, in my opinion, excellent. After being introduced by Bert,

he gave us a brief history of slavery from 1562 when the practise was first recorded through to the abolition of the Slave Trade and William Wilberforce. (Basically this was the extent of my knowledge. Perhaps this is not quite true, I do know that there are still reports of kidnapping and people who are kept in inhuman conditions

but I did not know just to what ex- tent until Harry spoke.)

ue to the vast wealth of infor- mation on the subject Harry

concentrated on the Cocoa farms of West Africa.

would not do the talk justice if I were to try to recall all the facts

and figures that we were given. so I shall not attempt the task. However a few phrases, which stuck, spring

to mind The (modern day) slave has NO EDUCATION, RIGHTS OR A FUTURE THE UNITED KINGDOM IS NOT IMMUNE FROM THE PROBLEM TRAFFICKING IS A GLOBAL PROBLEM NOT JUST AN AFRICAN ONE. TRAFFICKERS EXPLOIT NATURAL DIS- ASTERS SUCH AS HAITI EDUCTION IS KEY TO OVERCOMING THE PROBLEM

resident Brian finished the session with a vote of thanks after some very interesting

and probing questions from our members. I found the talk most interesting and equally dis- turbing. If Harry gets to read this article I would like to say a big thank you for bringing the prob- lem to our attention. Story supplied by Rtn George Larkey
