Christmas Display in Upminster
Door-to-door & outside Morton & Reeves Dec-09
C
hristmas comes but once a year, but for some of your
intrepid members it signals a time of great planning, much protracted design, engi- neering, and all other things that have - over the years - come to be associated with the Rotary Xmas float.....
B
eing a relatively new member of only 10 years
standing I arrived in the club to find that this piece of kit proba- bly represented Rotary's 2nd greatest asset - after its' mem- bers - but how it was acquired, put together and other- wise tended remains a complete mystery to me (? can somebody else write a story about
this?). Nonetheless, in my 1st year I quickly became aware of the enthusiasm that abounded for the col- lections that were made possible with it's use, the great benefits that came
from careful use of the col- lected funds, and I went on to become one of the myriad of 'helpers' under the more experi- enced direction of the reigning Chairman and members of the Community Ser- vice Committee at that time.
H
owever, more was to
come........ Eric Knight had gener- ously made storage available for many years but, clearly, it was wise to un-
dertake annual overhaul of the running gear to allow trouble- free movement to our collecting site outside Morton & Reeves, and from which building Michael Horrigan then supplied free electric
7
power to enable music to be played. Of course, the fact that dear old Stan Reeves also supplied the occasional cup of whisky-laden coffee to the collectors also helped greatly with the popularity of this site and it was great to see that Spar Grocers also provided sustenance to a few of our mem- bers on one of the particularly cold days this year.
