QUIZ TIME AT LANGTONS Junior School in Hornchurch January 2010
W
ay back, in the autumn of 2009,
Ray and Sylvia Needham
contacted Langtons Junior School
in Hornchurch, to enquire as to whether they would be interested in our club running a quiz similar to the one we run at Upminster Junior School. The school representative, Rosemarie Doherty, was extremely enthusiastic about the idea and the four of us set about organizing the event. Rose thought it would be a great way to start the term after the Christmas Holiday, and so Monday the 4th of January 2010 became the chosen date. Rose wanted to involve the whole school so we organized the proceedings in a slightly different way to how we run the Upminster Quiz. The new format required three sets of questions. We decided to use the one from Upminster, I made up a second set and once again Ray Hare‘s grandson Ben came up trumps with a third. (This is the second time he has made up a quiz for us so I decided to present him with one of the Rotary Dictionaries, as a thank you, for his time and effort.) Armed with our questions, a boxful of dictionaries and the engraved trophy which the club provided,
Ray, Sylvia and I arrived on a very frosty, cold Monday morning. We were accompanied by President Brian who had asked to come along to experience the academic life in a Junior School. Well, without going into details, the whole morning was a big success. Rose was absolutely delighted and the children were suitably excited. President Brian presented the individual members of the winning team with a Rotary dictionary and the winning captain was presented with the TROPHY.
question masters, Rose who provided the three sets of photographs for the picture quiz and Brian for his enthusiastic sup- port. Evidently I was rather ‗headmasterly‘ in my role of adjudicator. I just thought I was being ‗firm‘ when I threatened to deduct a point from the team if a member of the audience called out the answer) All in all we were delighted with the success of the morning and it was decided that we would be doing it all again next year. What a great way to start the term, despite the cold. Ironically the next day the school was closed due to the heavy fall of snow!
