Visit to Olympic Park Building Site 29th January 2010
W
e assembled at Stratford Station – and what an eye-opener that was – and
boarded a Coach outside to take us around and through the site. We had a superb Guide on board plus TV pictures as she spoke. The sheer size of the site – some 2.5 Sq kilometres ( or 357 football pitches )plus 8.35 kilometres of water- ways which had been cleared – deepened – wid- ened and a new lock built are most impressive. But when you go into the site and see the majestic Stadium, Aquatic Centre , Velo Park, International Broadcast and Press Centre, that is when you get some idea of scale. The Broadcasting and Press Centre single story- building could comfortably hold 5 Jumbo Jets inside ! The lovely sweeps of the architecture of the Stadium and other Centres are extremely pleasing to the eye. The sheer magnitude of the project is – as the youngsters say - awesome ! Also what you don't see, such as demolishing 50 overhead pylons and re-locating into tunnels un- derground were a massive task.
I
magine coordinating all the various Contractors – Sub-Contractors ,around
9-10,000 workers and delivering vehicles every few minutes. What a nightmare ! Fortunately as of this month (January) a lot of material will be delivered by the new Waterways on Barges.
A
ll in all a terrifically interesting and informative outing.

Dear Ron
Thank you for your email and sorry for not responding straight away. It is always good to receive positive feedback, so I am glad that the group enjoyed the tour.
With regard to a future visit, due to the very high level of demand that we are currently experiencing for group tours, we are currently having to restrict organisations to just one tour and for new requests received, we are unable to guarantee that a tour slot will become available during 2010.
However, tours for members of the general public do take place on the weekend and it possible to book up to six places a time on one of these, on Saturdays and Sundays at 10am, 11.30am, 1.30pm and 3pm. Please feel free to mention this to any of your members who are keen to go on a tour.
Thanks again. Kind regards.
