COLLEGE LIFE

There are no tuition fees to worry about. You have nothing to pay for normal tuition if you are under 19 when you enrol at College. (Details of fees for over 19s and overseas students are available from the College Admissions Office or website).

Most main text books are provided. In general, day-to-day stationery materials are not provided for you and you will have to contribute towards specialist materials in some practical subjects, e.g. Art and Photography and other specialist areas, e.g. Dance and Drama.

Other courses may involve visits and/or field trips, which will require a contribution from you of between 25% and 75% of the cost.

ALL STUDENTS WHO COME TO PALMER’S COLLEGE DO SO VOLUNTARILY AND CHOOSE THE SUBJECTS THEY WISH TO STUDY.

EACH COURSE IS INDIVIDUAL TO SUIT WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU AND YOUR FUTURE.

COLLEGE LIFE

The success that Palmer’s College enjoys is based on a partnership between students and staff that creates the friendly, vibrant and hardworking atmosphere that is typical of life at the College.

The 2000+ students at Palmer’s College are aged 16-19 years and following a one, two or three year full-time course. About two- thirds of our students come from the Thurrock area while the others come from Basildon, Brentwood, Billericay, Wickford, Rainham and beyond. Most years we have students from over 70 different schools. This means that there are many opportunities to meet and work with a wide circle of fellow students and make new friendships as well as maintain those you established at school.

Information Technology (IT) is an important part of the College and of your future. The College has over 1,000 networked PCs and there is a wide range of IT courses to choose from. You will be able to access the College Intranet and College emails from your home computer and IT will play a very important role in most courses.

THE COLLEGE DAY

The College, like your school, is a place of work and you are expected to attend regularly and punctually, and, since there are no lesson bells, arriving on time is your responsibility. All Palmer’s College students are on full-time courses. The College timetable runs from 9.00am to 4.30pm Monday to Thursday and 9.00am to 4.00pm Friday. However, there will be times each day when you are not timetabled for taught classes.

Most lessons are 1 to 1 ½ hour sessions in the morning and 1 hour sessions in the afternoon. There are student social and dining areas which are open throughout the day, as well as the Library for your use when you do not have lessons. We would expect that you set time aside on a regular basis for homework and follow-up to your classes.

Additional help is available for those with unfavourable financial circumstances. Further details will be available when you attend the College.

Students are asked to contribute £65 (towards the College Amenities Fund) for the time that they are attending the College. This fund provides students with financial support for a range of activities including local trips, PE events, annual Careers Fair, HE Fair, student planners, Tutor Group prizes, affiliation fees, contributions towards field trips and internet access.

A £55 returnable book deposit is also charged to encourage the return of books at the end of the student’s time at College.

Transport is generally provided free to those students from Thurrock who live at least three miles from the College.

A fee of £280 per year will be charged for the use of College funded transport for students living outside of Thurrock. Details of bus routes can be found on page 73 of this prospectus or on the website.

There are car parking facilities for those students who wish to drive to College, but passes for the car park will only be given once the student has attended a Safe Driving Presentation by the Essex Fire & Rescue Service.

If your family income is less than £30,810 a year (this figure is subject to change annually), then you may well qualify for the Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) – forms will be available during Year 11. More information is available on our website.
