GCSE COURSES


Where does GCSE English take me? Grade C or above at GCSE English is required for nearly all Further and Higher Education and a wide range of employment.


What do I need? All you need to bring along is commitment. Students who maintain good attendance and meet all deadlines usually do extremely well.


ENGLISH PREPARATORY COURSE


For some students, GCSE English can be quite demanding and challenging so we also offer a course which prepares you for GCSE English. It provides students with the skills, knowledge and confidence to progress on to GCSE with a greater chance of success. The course lasts one year and covers: reading, writing and speaking. There is no coursework and assessment is through two short exams which will take place in May.


HUMAN BIOLOGY


Why study GCSE Human Biology? This is a GCSE Science which looks in more detail at the human body and how it works. It is useful if you need a science qualification for your career aims, or if you would like to improve your biological knowledge beyond general Science. Please note this will not lead onto AS Biology.


What do I study? You learn about the human body and also human reproduction, the growth of the developing baby and basic genetics. Finally, you look at how humanity interacts with the world and our impact on natural ecosystems.


Where does GCSE Human Biology take me? This qualification can be useful for those planning to take up nursing or ancillary work in all branches of the Health Service, Agriculture, Environmental Health and Social Services.


What do I need? At least grade D in Science is desirable. You need reasonably good mathematical skills and clear written English.


ITALIAN


Why study GCSE Italian? Italian is a popular European language and knowledge of this language could be useful for commerce and tourism. Italian spelling and grammar is similar to French and Spanish.


What do I study? This is an intensive course (no previous knowledge of Italian is necessary). The specification covers twelve everyday topic areas and develops the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The GCSE course will lay the foundations for further study of the language. There is the possibility of taking AS-level Italian in the second year.


Where does GCSE Italian take me? Italian will be useful in areas such as Secretarial and Business studies, Banking, Importing and Exporting, Travel and Tourism, Music, Fine Art and Art & Design.


What do I need? Persistence and commitment to cope with the challenge of an intensive course and good study skills will be of great importance. A minimum grade C at GCSE in another foreign language (although exceptions may be made).


LAW


Why study GCSE Law? Each of us is involved with the legal system in one way or another throughout our lives, and GCSE Law will give students the opportunity to explore and understand the system they are a part of. You will have the opportunity to critically evaluate the laws we make, developing the creative and critical thinking skills valued by employers. You will also have an appreciation of the law that will be invaluable not only in your personal life, but also in your future working life.


What do I study? • The GCSE Law course offers students the opportunity to explore a wide range of legal topics, including criminal and contract law.


• Students will learn about the legal profession, including the training and

work of Barristers and Solicitors, which will be of particular interest to students hoping to work in a legal environment.


• The course also questions the nature of law in society; why do we have laws, who makes them and what influences the laws we have?


• Students will also discuss, with reference to current affairs, the rights and freedoms they have and what limitations are placed on these freedoms.


Where does GCSE Law take me? This qualification will be particularly useful for those wishing to pursue a career in the legal environment, which could include not only law firms but also local government, the Police or Social Services. Students studying for the ILEX Diploma for Legal Secretaries or the BTEC in Business will find this course particularly helpful.


What do I need? Good English skills, at least a grade D in GCSE English, and good study skills will be invaluable.
