ENRICHMENT COURSES EXTENDED PROJECT
The Extended Project was created to provide you, in preparation for Higher Education or work, with wider non-specialist skills such as independent research and study skills and personal, learning and thinking skills.
The Extended Project is a Level 3, one year programme with the same UCAS tariff as an AS, graded A* to E. It allows you to study in depth a subject of your choice, to produce a significant body of work that fulfils one of four different units: dissertation, performance, filed study/investigation or artefact.
You can use the course as an additional subject to support and extend you in preparation for university or work, or potentially to change from an existing subject. You will need a good academic record and be able to demonstrate commitment to your studies.
There are no specific entry criteria but the course does require an interview with the Curriculum Manager to assess suitability for individual students.
FRENCH/GERMAN/ SPANISH PLUS
Why study French/German/Spanish Plus? If you are taking AS French/German/Spanish, you must sign up for this course as it gives you the time to prepare for Unit 2 of the AS examination which is the speaking test.
What do I study? For Unit 2 you will have to discuss a target- language stimulus card based on one of the AS topics and take part in a conversation covering three further AS topic areas. You will need to spend time becoming familiar with possible stimulus material for the first part of the test. You will also need to prepare and practise possible answers to questions on the four AS topic areas and engage as naturally and spontaneously as possible in a conversation in the target language with your classmates and teacher.
What do I need? You will be expected to take part orally in class, undertake thorough preparation and revision and be well organised. You should also make the most of any opportunity to speak French/German/Spanish with your friends, penfriends or teachers.
69 PALMER’S COLLEGE PROSPECTUS GAMES (RECREATIONAL)
This is a recreational games programme for lunchtime activities where you will have the opportunity to take part in the following:
• fitness • badminton • basketball • football • squash • short Tennis • volley ball
These are enjoyable activities and improve fitness levels.
All you need is a willingness to attend and participate in a variety of activities. Appropriate kit. No canvas shoes to be worn, trainers only.
GAMES (TEAM)
Why study Team Games? Team games will give you the opportunity to represent the College in competitive sports against other colleges. This will take place on Wednesday afternoons.
What do I study? The College teams that are available include:
• football (men’s and women’s) • netball • rugby • basketball
In addition, other team games that may take place subject to staff and student availability are:
• badminton • tennis • trampolining • table tennis • athletics
Where does Team Games take me? There are no direct career opportunities but enjoyable activities and improved skill and fitness levels. It will also look impressive on your CV. The Curriculum Manager of team games will keep students informed of any coaching courses that may be advertised within different sports.
What do I need? You need commitment, enthusiasm and willingness to attend and compete.
VOLUNTARY SERVICE
Why study Voluntary Service? Voluntary Service gives you the opportunity to develop/enhance your skills of working with people. Although the vast majority of placements are in education (pre-school to secondary and special needs). Students interested in pursuing a career in teaching or working with children would benefit from the opportunities this course offers as it would complement their career aim.
What do I study? You will need to make a study based on your experience within the placement setting and you will be expected to keep an accurate up- to-date record of activities undertaken via a reflective diary.
Where does Voluntary Service take me? This course gives you an insight into working with people and will enhance your CV when applying for a job/university (especially if it involves dealing with people).
What do I need? You need to have an interest in working with people and helping in the community. You will also need to be motivated and have good organisational and interpersonal skills.
