BTEC COURSES MEDIA PRODUCTION


Why study the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Media Production? The BTEC Extended Diploma in Media Production will give you the opportunity to develop your understanding of all aspects of moving image, print and audio based media industries. It balances theory with media production. This is a popular and successful course to help you develop your skills, interests and ideas in all aspects of media as it links directly with working in the media.


What do I study? You will study eighteen units dealing with vocationally specific areas of media industries. These are all coursework/ assignment based and there are no written exams. Aspects covered include video editing, print production, advertising on radio and scriptwriting. You will gain a deeper understanding of the workings of media industries and there will be many opportunities to develop individual skills using industry standard resources. You may also have the opportunity to undertake a relevant work placement.


Where does the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Media Production take me? Job opportunities can be diverse in media industries e.g. Producer, Engineer, Sound Recordist, Editor, Advertising Copywriter, Scriptwriter and Teaching.


The course is a recognised entrance qualification for Higher Education and university, especially for courses which emphasise practical media production.


What do I need? GCSE Media Studies is welcomed though not essential.


MUSIC TECHNOLOGY


Why study the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Music Technology? The BTEC Extended Diploma in Music Technology will give you the opportunity to develop your understanding of all aspects of the music technology industry. It is a highly practical, vocational course allowing you to develop your skills using industry standard equipment within sequencing, recording and

live sound. You will have the opportunity to develop your interests and skills in this popular and successful area of study.


What do I study? The qualification consists of five core units and twelve specialist units over two years. These will be assessed through assignments and course work, there are no formal examinations. The areas of study are as follows:


Core units: • listening skill for music technologists • music production techniques • planning and delivering a music product • sequencing systems and techniques • the sound and music industry


Specialist units: • acoustics for musicians • audio engineering principles • delivering a music product • marketing and promotion in the music industry


• music and society • music and sound for the moving image • music technology in performance • sound creation and manipulation • studying music from around the world • the music freelance world • working with music notation software packages


• special subject investigation


Where does the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Music Technology take me? Successful completion of the BTEC Extended Diploma in Music Technology offers various routes for progression, these include: Higher Education opportunities within Music Technology, Music Production and performance. Employment within the music technology/production industry including: Studio Management, Music Publishing, Live and Studio Engineering/Production and Studio Management.


What do I need? • an interest in all aspects of music, music technology and music production


• the ability to work independently and with others


• good organisational skills and the ability to work to task to meet deadlines


• GCSE Maths and English preferred • GCSE Music is an advantage but not essential


• an ICT qualification PERFORMING ARTS


Why study the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts? This is a vocational qualification for the Performing Arts. The course offers you the chance to build on your enthusiasm for creating high standard performances within a dynamic group. You will be encouraged to demonstrate your commitment, energy, self- discipline and time management skills as well as your performing talents. Our students are outstanding for their teamwork and dedication.


What do I study? Eighteen coursework units dealing with the theoretical and practical aspects of the Performing Arts including acting, dance and singing, together with the technical, design and administrative skills needed to create and run successful productions.


Where does the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts take me? This course is a recognised entrance qualification for Higher Education and drama schools. It is also of value to careers within Administration, Marketing, Sales and PR work.


What do I need? We would expect the equivalent of four GCSEs at grade C or above including English. Drama at GCSE is not essential, but welcomed.


The deadline for applications for this course is 31st January 2011.


Suitable students will be asked to prepare an assignment as part of the selection process and take part in a practical workshop. You will need to be available for outside College hours’ rehearsals.


*Please note that if you study this course you will not always be able to catch the College bus in the evenings as you will need to be available after College for rehearsals and shows. On these occasions you will have to make your own arrangements for transport home.


*There is an additional fee of approximately £125 which contributes towards the cost of attending theatre events. This is a compulsory part of the course.
