AS/A2 LEVELS PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PE)

Why study Physical Education? AS/A2 Physical Education provides you with the opportunity to study both in and out of the classroom. There will be a one hour practical session each week where you will develop your skills in two activities. The rest of the time will be classroom-based but, wherever possible, theory will always be related to sporting situations.

What do I study? Year 1 (AS) Unit 1: An introduction to Physical Education

Unit 2: Acquiring, developing and evaluating practical skills in Physical Education

Assessment: 2 hour written paper

Practical assessment in TWO chosen activities from TWO different activity profiles.

Year 2 (A2) Unit 3: Principles and concepts across different areas of Physical Education

Unit 4: The improvement of effective performance and the critical evaluation of practical activities in Physical Education

Assessment: 2½ hour written paper Practical assessment in ONE chosen activity.

Where does Physical Education take me? PE is a recognised academic subject which can be combined with Arts or Science for entry into Higher Education. It has particular value for careers in Sports Science, Teaching Physical Education, Sports Studies and Recreation Management. It is beneficial for students intending to pursue a career in Physiotherapy, especially if combined with Biology or Chemistry AS/A2 levels.

What do I need? This is a theoretical subject so an interest in the theory behind Physical Education and an ability in the practical element is essential. You should have studied GCSE PE and gained at least a grade C. You should also have a grade C in Maths and English. Students who have not studied PE may be considered if their GCSE results suggest they will be able to cope.
