BTEC COURSES APPLIED SCIENCE


Why study the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science? If you are clear about the area of employment or further study that you wish to enter, then the BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science offers you the chance to find out about the applications of a range of different science subjects, not just the traditional Chemistry, Biology and Physics. The course is entirely assessed by coursework, therefore you need to be very organised, motivated and keen to find ‘things’ out for yourself. The qualification is equivalent to three A-levels.


What do I study? During the two years you will study six core units: • fundamentals of science • working in the science industry • scientific investigation • scientific practical techniques • perceptions of science • application of numbers for science technicians


Plus six other units selected by the College, these are likely to be: • forensics • medical physics techniques • microbiology • human physiology • chemistry • electrical circuits and their industrial applications


Where does the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science take me? This course will provide you with the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for a variety of science related jobs and courses at university. Previous students have gone on to be Pharmacy Technicians in hospitals, and others have gone to university to study Forensics and health related courses.


What do I need? In addition to a keen interest in Science, you will need to show high levels of motivation, commitment and initiative plus good organisational skills. In addition to the College’s entry requirements for BTEC courses on page 19, you will need to show that you have good English skills.
