AS/A2 LEVELS APPLIED SCIENCE

Why study Applied Science? This course has been designed to provide progression from Level 2 to Level 3; it aims to provide science in context and links to the world of work. The course has a vocational context built into content of units; the units are designed to be relevant to local/national employers. Students have a wide choice of units to choose from. In addition, it may be of interest to students who enjoyed science at school and who wish to study a range of science subjects rather than concentrating on studying the individual sciences in depth.

Applied Science is mainly assessed by portfolio work: two out of the three units are assessed this way. Bear in mind that this does not make it an easy option - there is a lot of work involved and deadlines which need to be met.

What do I study? Year 1 (AS) Unit 1: Investigating Science at Work Unit 2: Energy Transfer Systems Unit 3: Finding out about Substances

Year 2 (A2) Unit 7: Planning & Carrying out a Scientific Investigation (compulsory) Unit 14: The Healthy Body One additional unit

Where does Applied Science take me? Applied Science can lead on to careers in Radiography, Biomedical Sciences and Nursing and other non-scientific degrees such as Sports Science and Law.

What do I need? You need to have gained at least a grade C in GCSE Science or a Distinction in BTEC First Diploma Science and have good communication skills. You should have a genuine interest in science, be highly motivated and keen to develop skills learnt during the theory lessons and apply them to practical work.

SOCIOLOGY

Why study Sociology? Sociologists want to understand how society works. It is a subject for students who are genuinely interested in people and the society they live in. Sociology will assist students to learn about their own identity and understand the processes involved in the formation of this identity. Students are encouraged to develop critical thinking, taking nothing at face value.

What do I study? Year 1 (AS) You will study two units:

Unit 1: Exploring Socialisation, Culture and Identity This involves studying how identities and cultures are formed, including the process of socialisation.

Unit 2: Topics in Socialisation, Culture and Identity This unit concentrates on the family. This explores how demographic and social changes have influenced the family.

Year 2 (A2) You will study two units:

Unit 3: Power and Control This will study the topic of crime and deviance.

Unit 4: Exploring Social Inequality and Difference This is a synoptic paper, encouraging students to use all their sociological knowledge gained over the course.

Where does Sociology take me? It is a respected academic subject and an excellent preparation for Higher Education. It also provides many of the thinking and interpersonal skills required in today’s employment market. It has particular value for careers in a wide range of areas from Law to Personnel Management.

What do I need? You will need to have a grade C or above in GCSE English Language, a willingness to participate in group work and be prepared to read widely. Sociology requires maturity and sensitivity, as well as the ability to analyse and evaluate complex ideas. Sociology is a demanding subject requiring students to challenge studies and theories.

Please note that there is no coursework and the exams are mostly essay based.
