SPORT & EXERCISE SCIENCES


Why study the BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport & Exercise Sciences? This is a course that involves you in a variety of theoretical and practically based work. Assessment is in the form of assignments throughout. Your assignments involve realistic, workplace activities. In addition to learning about Sport and Exercise Sciences, you will develop the skills you need to continue to study or pursue a career in sport.


What do I study? Core Units: • anatomy for sport and exercise • sport and exercise physiology • sport and exercise psychology • research methods for sport and exercise sciences


• research project in sport and exercise sciences


• fitness testing for sport and exercise


A selection of twelve optional units must be taken from: • sports biomechanics in action • exercise, health and lifestyle • fitness training and programming • sport and exercise massage • analysis of sports performance • sports nutrition • current issues in sport • instructing physical activity and exercise • sports injuries • sports coaching • practical individual sports • practical team sports • outdoor and adventurous activities • applied sport and exercise psychology • applied sport and exercise physiology • exercise for specific groups • work experience in sport


Where does the BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport & Exercise Sciences take me? The course is equivalent to three A-levels and is a recognised entry qualification for Higher Education. It has particular value for courses in Sports Science, Physical Education, Sports Studies, Sports Therapy and along with another A-level course, Physiotherapy. The course is also recognised by employers and opportunities in the Health and Fitness industry, Sports Injury Clinics, Coaching and Sports Development would be available.


What do I need? To be successful in the course you require a keen interest in sport and science.

In addition to learning about Sport Performance and Excellence, you will develop the skills you need to continue to study or pursue a career in sport.


What do I study? Core Units: • principles of anatomy and physiology in sport • the physiology of fitness • assessing risk in sport • fitness training and programming • fitness testing for sport and exercise • sports nutrition • psychology for sports performance • technical and tactical skills in sport • the athlete’s lifestyle


A selection of twelve optional units must be taken from: • sports coaching • practical team sports • current issues in sport • exercise, health and lifestyle • instructing physical activity and exercise • sports injuries • analysis of sports performance • talent identification and development in sport • sport and exercise massage • rules, regulations and officiating in sport • organising sports events • physical education and the care of children and young people

Where does the BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport (Performance & Excellence) take me? The course is equivalent to three A-levels and is a recognised entry qualification for Higher Education.
