OVERVIEW
FUTURE PROOF THE DATA CENTER
Learn how Cisco’s Nexus 9000 switching line enables a data center’s transition into a software-defined environment.
Mark Levin, PDM for the Cisco Data Center Architecture Team, recently sat down to record a podcast where he discussed Cisco‘s application-centric infrastructure. He also covered how it can revolutionize application deployment in next-generation data centers and clouds. Here‘s an excerpt from that discussion.
Q: WHAT IS CISCO DOING TO HELP COMPANIES REACH THE GOAL OF OVERALL AGILITY?
A: Cisco has introduced groundbreaking technology centered around our Nexus 9000 switching platform to specifically drive software defined networking (SDN), or what we call ACI applications. It provides a great platform to do any type of data center infrastructure. It‘s brand new, and it‘s gaining a lot of momentum in the market.
Q: WHAT IS ACI?
A: ACI—or application-centric infrastructure—is the Cisco- branded version of the industry term of SDN. In an ACI environment you have the ability to setup policies. And these policies are derived from the application expert. They take all their expertise and develop policies about how they want the network to act and how they want the applications to operate on that network. These policies create a way for the network to work in a very efficient manner with very rapid deployment, again, with an eye on making sure those applications run well all the time.
COMPUTING Learn how to drive costs and complexity out of the data center with VMware EUC.
Tony D'Ancona, VP for VMware EUC for PC Connection, Inc., recently sat down to record a podcast where he discussed VMware end user computing and how it can drive costs and complexity out of your data center. Here‘s an excerpt from that discussion.
Q: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EUC AND VDI?
A: VDI—or virtual desktop infrastructure—is a great solution for that well-connected user that‘s physically in his office. End user computing (EUC) solves the issues modern “disconnected” employees face—be it on the road, a mobile device, or simply without a stable connection to the Internet.
Q: WHAT ARE SOME BIG CHALLENGES TO VDI?
A: Cost is one issue—and the perception of that cost. Businesses need to consider what you can do with VDI. And there have been advances in virtual storage area networks (VSAN). They make stateless computing a real possibility for most businesses.
Q: HOW ARE OFFLINE USERS MANAGED?
A:With VMware Mirage you can centralize an entire notebook. From there, you can push incremental updates or new apps while retaining all user settings, programs, and files. This is a game changer for offline, disconnected users.
