Growth reported across world theme parks industry
WORLD
THE Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) and Los Angeles-based analysts at AECOM have published the latest Global Attractions Attendance Report, heralding 2011 as a year of ‘economic recovery’ and ‘increased globalisation’ for the world’s theme park and tourism industry. According to the report, there
was ‘healthy growth’ in the number of visits made to theme parks in all three key markets of North America, Europe and Asia last year. Asian parks performed particularly
well during 2011, reporting an increase of 9.4 per cent in total visits - with overall attendance having for the first time passed the 100 million mark. Total visits to the top 20 theme parks in North America
increased by 2.9 per cent while attendance for the top 20 European parks was up by 2.8 per cent. “Europe has not had a great year from an overall
economic standpoint,” commented John Robinett, a senior vice-president
at AECOM. “Under the circumstances,
theme parks grew at 2.8 per cent which is a laudable performance given the conditions and consumer sentiment. “Most of us in the industry need to be able to bring
our services to the global community. AECOM has found that the way to thrive internationally is to build a strong local presence - to have resources, operations and local knowledge in every major market. “A strong local presence empowers a company to assess
markets economically and produce meaningful feasibility studies and economic impact reports; it facilitates pulling together teams of specialist creatives and taking a project successfully through production and construction.”

World’s tallest Boomerang coaster opens
GOLIATH has opened at Six Flags, New England, US, becoming the world’s tallest inverted Boomerang coaster. The attraction is the 11th roller coaster to open at the
park and propels riders out of the station and up the first tower, where they then experience a plummet down 20 storeys at speeds exceeding 60mph. This is followed by guests being rocketed upside down
over a 102ft-tall vertical loop, which leads to a 110ft- tall butterfly turn, before hurtling 20 storeys upwards. Once the coaster reaches the end of the track riders can enjoy the whole experience all over again as the coaster completes the ride in reverse. Manufactured by Vekoma, Goliath stands alongside a
host of other, equally-impressive rides, such as Batman the Dark Knight and Bizarro. Park president John Winkler commented: “As the
park’s record-breaking coaster, Goliath is the perfect complement to our incredible coaster collection. With this latest addition, Six Flags New England surpasses all parks in New England with the largest collection of coasters and attractions. There’s no better way to kick off an epic season than with the addition of Goliath,” he added.
