Angry Birds migrate to China


ROVIO, the Finnish gaming company behind the popular Angry Birds video game franchise, has opened a Shanghai office and outlined plans for theme parks and stores across China. Angry Birds, the second


most popular paid iPhone app, has a huge fan base


in China. Now, the makers of the game - which features cartoon birds attacking their enemies, the pigs - hopes to convert that popularity into legitimate sales. “We expect to be more Chinese than the Chinese people


and we will add more Chinese cultural elements to our products,” said Rovio’s Peter Vesterbacka. Rovio is opening stores in Shanghai and Beijing and is


building an Angry Birds-themed activity park in Shanghai’s Tongji University, similar to the one at Finland’s Sarkanniemi amusement park.


Ripley unveils new entertainment concept


FOLLOWING four years of development, US-based leisure giant Ripley Entertainment has announced plans to launch a new Guinness World Records attraction in Asia. With over 80 attractions in 10


countries, Ripley is no stranger to the entertainment industry. However, this new attraction concept will give visitors the opportunity to interact and attempt to beat a variety of world records themselves.


“Guinness World Records Attractions is an exciting new


development that is sure to appeal to families across Asia,” said Ripley president, Jim Pattison. “We are delighted to be working with the Guinness World Records team to provide a very interactive, high tech attraction where individuals and families can break world records in a variety of unique and fun ways.”

Horse Amusement Equipment Company, has unveiled its latest ride in South Korea. The 30m-high Chute Ride has been installed at


Gyeongju World Resort, the largest amusement venue in the south of the country. The flume-style water ride seats 20 passengers and includes numerous thrill drops and a ‘spectacular splash.’ According to Golden Horse, management at Gyeongju


are “extremely pleased” with the new ride, reporting positive feedback from customers.

Polar Adventure is Ocean Park’s latest themed attraction zone


Ocean Park takes eco-friendly approach


HONG Kong’s Ocean Park has used the latest innovations in sustainable building processes in order to minimise the carbon footprint of the new, soon-to-open, Polar Adventure themed attraction. The company worked with local architectural firm Leigh


and Orange, which has an international reputation, as well as award-winning green project credentials. Polar Adventure has been designed to ensure that the eco- friendly installation is also optimised for the well-being of its polar animal ambassadors. Every


aspect of the attraction’s design has been


conceived with an eco-friendly approach in mind and this includes the world’s first ventilation system that recycles residual cool air to cool down the Life Support System and plant room area before being discharged. Polar Adventure is the final phase of Ocean Park’s


HK$5.5bn (US$709m) investment in the company’s Master Redevelopment Plan. Attractions include a conservation and education platform, which features a variety of animals such as penguins, walruses, spotted seals and more.

theme park concept for children aged between four and 14-years, is set to open a new location at Singapore’s Sentosa Island. An 11,500 sq. m family entertainment centre at the


island’s Palawan Beach will house the new KidZania park and will complement the region’s other attractions. Sentosa Development Corporation, which oversees


the island’s


development and attractions mix, and Themed Attractions and Resorts (TAR) are behind the new KidZania park. TAR already operates KidZania Kuala Lumpur in


Malaysia, which opened in February, and will run the new site in a joint venture with Boustead Holdings Berhad via Rakan Riang Pte.
